Whilst researching my own Timbrells, I came across somebody whose Timbrells  were in Minety from the 1600's.  She as a member of the Wiltshire family history society and members addresses are published, so am sure it would be ok for me to give you her address.  She may be able to help.
Mrs M.J. Gibbs.  41 Stanley Road, Warmley, Bristol, BS15 4NX.
Also if you look at www.ancestral-villages.co.uk you will find your Thomas Timbrell, and a contact e-mail address.  Unless this is you.

Wiltshire / Re: birth and burial look up melksham

Hello Nell,

Thanks for your help.  It does look like the same family to me. although as you say there were a lot of Gerrishes.  Yes, the family were listed as living at Broughton Road, Melksham on the 1871 census and William was at home.  The family were also still  there in1881, although only Ellen (wife), Stephen and William were there on that occassion.  I know William married in the Bradford District, and he also lived at Broughton Gifford, prior to living at Whitely.  However they were a very transient family!  Apparently William was not a nice man, was a drunkard and used to hit about his wife, which is why my grandma severed all ties with him when her mother died.  If I send for the death certificate it is likely that there will be nothing on it to connect him to my family, as I don't think he had any other children.  My grandma moved to Sheffield and did not invite him to her wedding.  I feel a bit stuck really because as you say it is any ones guess where the family were, and it is also anyones guess where William moved to after his wife died!  I suppose I could just go to the records ofice at Trowbridge and start a search of all the parish records.  If you come up with any good ideas please let me know.

Best Wishes Denise

Wiltshire / birth and burial look up melksham

I am trying to confirm before sending off for a birth certificate that this William Gerrish is my relative.  His birth was recorded in the September qtr, in 1862 at Melksham.  According to the census information I have for 1871 his family were as follows:-

Matthew Gerrish       head   age 44? miller    born Melksham
Ellen Gerrish             wife     "      37                "       "
Annie   "                    daughter    14                "       "
Stephen   "                 son              11               "       "
William (This is him?) son               8                "       "
Winnifred   Gerrish     daughter     7                 "       "
Ellen            "              daughter    3                 "       "
John            "               son            7 months    "       "

I also have his  marriage certificate stating that his father was Matthew Gerrish, and that he was born in Melksham, but the date does not tie in with the civil registration date by two years.  I would be pleased if anyonecould check the parish records for his baptism, and any other info' for this family would be great.

I also have a problem in tracing when and where he died.  My grandma, his only daughter cut all ties with him.  I wondered if he may have returned to Melksham, so if any one could check burials for me too. He was living at Whitely until 2nd nov 1915 when his wife Caroline died.  After that I know nothing.  I would appreciate any help, thanks.

Wiltshire Completed Lookup Requests / Baptism Nettleton
« on: Tuesday 01 March 05 09:56 GMT (UK)  »

I saw that you were able to look up a baptism for Nettleton.  I was wondering if You could tell me anything about the Timbrell family?  I have a birth certificate for Caroline Timbrell, born at Nettleton 19th Jan 1858.  Other members of her family were with the Timbrell surname were, Charles, Fanny, Hannah, Harriet, Job, John, Sidney.  These were all on the 1871 census for Yatton Keynall, which is close by.  Some family members were born in Nettleton, and some at Yatton Keynall.  I am trying to find out where the family were based.  Baptisms, burials ets would help.  I have only just begun to think about using Parish records.  Up to now I have been able to use censuses and certificates.  Would be grateful for any help.

Wiltshire Completed Lookup Requests / Re: William Gerrish look up please

Thankyou Jonathon,

I was trying to save myself a journey over to Wiltshirerecords office.  I did not know that there were directories on line, I will give it a go.  The directories I had in mind were the County directories, giving information on residents in villages and towns, and local directories.  Some of these at the library give information on individuals.  Also at a recent fair I saw a cd rom with post office records of names and addresses, but can't remember the dates of those. wondered if anyone might have purchased one.

Wiltshire Completed Lookup Requests / William Gerrish look up please
« on: Saturday 26 February 05 16:13 GMT (UK)  »
Please can anyone help, me trace a William Gerrish.  The last record of him that I have is that he was resident at New Buildings, Whitely, Melksham -without.  I have no idea what happened to him after that.  His parents originated from Melksham.  His only daughter cut off contact from him in 1915 when his wife died, so he could have moved anywhere, or remarried, even emmigrated.  Does anyone have a directory that could help me start at that date? He was a plasterer and tiler by trade.  Thanks.

Hello Casalguidi,

Thanks for that.  Was afraid that there would be no 'short cut'.

Please can anyone give me advice on the easiest way to trace what happened to my great grandfather William Gerrish.  He was born in 1864 and his family lived in Melksham, Wiltshire.  He was still alive in 1915 when he lived in Whitely, Melksham(stated on her death certificate)  However as soon as my great grandmother died, my grandma moved out because he was apparently not a nice man.  He did not attend my grandma's wedding, and she moved to Sheffield and had no further contact with him.  He was a batchelor when he married my great grandmother, and as far as I know had no other children at that time.  Therefore he had no real reason to stay in Wiltshire.  I have searched the bmd indexes, but have come up with quite a few possibilities, but how do I know which is him? Is there a way I can trace his whereabouts after 1915?  I have found it easier to trace backwards further with the help of censuses, however more recent relations seem more difficult to me.  I know he was a plasterer and tiler- would he be likely to be registered in a trade directory? I would just like ideas on the quickest way to narrow the search down please?
