in the 1950,s on a Saturday night after the various dances
finished.

Banffshire / Re: Odd Surnames Chizet and Gaa in Grange?

Just recently caught up with this thread and the post about
Margaret Bruce and John Christie. My wife's family
are descended through Margaret and John's daughter
Isabella Christie born in Garrowood in 1807 who married
an Andrew Murdoch in Grange in 1828. We have traced
the family after this but have nothing before.
Its interesting to read about Margaret Bruce because
all we knew about her was from some christenings and some
death certs. John Christie is in the 1841 Census but not
Margaret.

Banffshire / Street numbering
« on: Friday 22 November 13 20:05 GMT (UK)  »
In Newmill Keith in the 1911 Census house numbers in Hill Street Newmill
51 to 55 are shown. These numbers are not used as far as can be seen
now, using Google street view. Does anyone know if there was a
change in the system used to identify these houses ?

Hello Carolyn,
Just read about your Angus McEachern being from the Oa.
There is an Ann McLean who died in the Oa in 1862 and her spouse
is given as Angus McEachern.  If this is the right Ann then her parents
are given as John McLean and Christine Taylor.
This info is listed on the Ted Larson site on Islay  at
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~steve/islay/data.htm
This is well worth a look as it covers births deaths and marriages on Islay.
Islay's population reached around 14 to 15000 in the 1830's.
By 1880 was 7500 and is now under 3500.
I'll be offline for a week as I'm off to Islay tomorrow.

Hello Islay 1
No problem about joining in. Glad to hear from you.
I'm not aware of any McEacherns in the family but thats
not to say there are none.
Ann McLean/McLeargan would have to be the sister of
Archibalds father, Alexander.  So,  to be this Archibald's
nephew  Ann's parents would be
 Lachlan McLergan and Mary McQuarrie.
I don't know if you know her parents.
We only know of two children of Lachlan and Mary so any addition is welcome.
Archibald McLean was a  common name in Port Charlotte, so cannot say
for certain if we have a connection

Just caught up with your post of Dec 09 and can maybe add a bit extra about Archibald..
Archibald McLean was the second son of
Alexander McLean and Margaret McLean  and was born on 15th Aug 1811
in Glasgow where Alex also a Tailor (or Taylor on the wedding record)and Margaret were married in the Gaelic Chapel Glasgow.on 29th Nov 1808.
The next I can find is the birth of a sister to Archibald
in Gearrach Islay on Sept 1 1822 , Isabella, now back to the name McLergan..
Archibald is shown on the 1841 Census living with father Alexander, and sisters Margaret and Isabella but no mother Margaret.
Archibald died on May 21 1881 in Shore St Port Charlotte.
My connection is with Archibalds brother John, also born in Glasgow
on  Jan 15th 1810 and died Apr 24 1881 who was my GGGrandfather.
Alexander died in Port Charlote 0n Jan 21st 1869, his death cert again using the old name of McLergan and giving his father as Lachlan McLergan and mother asMary McQuarrie.
Archibald appears to have changed to McLean earlier
than John who was still John McLergan in Coull/Machrie as late as 1861.
