Lancashire / Tootle family Ashton-in-Makerfield
« on: Sunday 20 June 10 21:03 BST (UK)  »
I am helping to research the TOOTLE family history and would like to share information with any other researchers interested in this name.  During the 19th century, the Tootles were based around Ashton-in-Makerfield and had ties to coall mining.

In 1930 Arnold and Robina are living in Florida.  There are several family tree matches on Ancestry.  I can help you with contacts.

Cheshire / Re: Malkins Bank????

It was a lot more than a salt mine !   A toxic dump for chemical waste in later years but the reclaimation effort was well done.
Take a walk up the canal from Malkins Bank to Hassall Green, there are some great features of the canal and the field that the canal bisects.

Lancashire / 1927 Birth information / Liverpool
« on: Friday 04 June 10 16:23 BST (UK)  »
This is a long shot but I`ll ask !    I am seeking any information on (*) born 20th May 1927 in Liverpool and christened 8th September 1927, also in Liverpool.

(*) may have assumed the maiden surname (*) thus (*) is a possibility.

Regretably this is all the information that I have.

Hopefully there are fellow researchers out there with family tree matches or descendents that can help.

Thanks from across the atlantic.....

I received a reply to my letter in the Bridgnorth Journal from a 76 year young resident.  Thanks again for the suggestion, this has provided a few more snippets of information.

Cheshire / Re: Hassall Green Fields

The "lost" houses cleared for the M6 construction may well be the location since this is close to Fields Farm ~ just a little further along the road to Malkins Bank.  Not sure if the old farmer is still alive (Tom Jones) at Fields Farm , we used to talk about the old days, but his son Brian is still farming there so may be worth contacting.  There could also be photographs taken prior or during construction ~ Cheshire Record Office ?

Let me know if you need any more snippits, glad to help.

Cheshire / Re: Malkins Bank????

Slightly off topic but provides context : Malkins Bank is a ribbon settlement alongside the Trent & Mersey canal and the one road that runs through the hamlet (from Hassall Green to Sandbach).  There are some old terraced houses (still standing) that were associated with workers in salt , chemical works and canal workers.  Some of us oldies remember when the chemical spoil heaps caught fire. Perhaps unkindly for Malkins Bank the prevailing wind frequently blew a stink from Malkins Bank to the next hamlet (Hassall Green) and this provided many choice phrases !  However, the rivalry between hamlets was never more than occasional attempts at humour.

Cheshire / Re: Sandbach National school
« on: Monday 31 May 10 21:09 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I attended Sandbach School in the pre-comprehensive days of the 11 plus examination.  I do not recall ever hearing the title National School applied to Sandbach School.  The school was a grammar school but different from state schools in that the local authority paid for your attendance if you passed the 11 plus (I recall the term direct grant school).  There were old photos of sheep being raised in the grounds and boarders until just after the war (?).  The junior school on the same site was private in my days (1970s).

My sister still lives in Sandbach and I will ask her if an old school building (once was scout hall) is still standing as this may have an inscription, a long shot but still worth investigating.
