The Common Room / Jesse O'BYRAN - Trying To Help An American Friend
« on: Saturday 24 March 07 23:57 GMT (UK)  »
An American friend is trying to find her English roots.  Sadly the only thing she knows about her Great Grandfather is that his name was Jesse O'Bryan she thinks he was born about1849.
The spelling O'Bryan is unusual, and I would think he might well have been Irish.
He went to America where he became a fur trapper and married an American Indian.  Sadly they didn't keep written records as such, everything was passed down by word of mouth.
A mammoth task I think, but I did tell her that if anyone could find information it would probably be someone in Rootschat, so if anyone could find any information it would be fantastic.
I keep recommending this site to my friends, and they have all been most impressed.
Thanks in anticipation, but I will understand if it proves impossible with so little to go on.

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Henry and Susanna Burtenshaw
« on: Sunday 03 December 06 21:44 GMT (UK)  »

Can anyone help me please  :)
I have just found that my Great Great Grandfather Henry Burtenshaw married Susanna, I have no surname for her, all I know is that she was born in Tonbridge Kent in 1820.  I don't know where Henry was born, but believe it might be Margate.
Thanks in anticipation

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Joseph Wells Born in Margate?
« on: Friday 03 November 06 11:29 GMT (UK)  »
I have mixed information about the birth of Joseph Wells, one tells me he was born in 1798, and the other in 1816, but both say he was born  in Margate.
He married Susan Tucker, don't know where or whe(sounds like the song), she was born 1824 and died 1908.
I have information about them and their children etc, but nothing about his birth.
I would be so greatful to have something to go on.
Thanks

Completed Census Requests / Re: Wells alias Luckhurst in parish records
« on: Tuesday 19 July 05 15:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi Chris,
I am sorry I can't help you out, but I am hunting down the Wells family.
I have got back to Joseph Wells born 1816, he started the Wells Firework factory.  He married Susan Tucker date of marriage not known.  Their eldest son Joseph was born in Margate, in 1844, he married Mary Ann maiden name unknown, and their eldest child Louisa (my Grandmother) was born in Camberwell in 1867.  They seemed to have moved about a bit, wondered if any of the names rang a bell with you. Good luck with your puzzle.
Cheers

Hi Casalguidi,
In the 1871 census, they were living at 2, Henry Street, St. Pauls, Deptford.  No trace of them before that, and no idea where they might have been.  I know the spelling could have been wrong, it still is to this day!!  Thanks anyway
Cheers

Hi Casalguidi
Yes Joseph was married to Marry Ann, and it was he who started the Joseph Wells firework company.  He was my Great Grandfather.  My Gt  Grandfather could well have been a servant to a coal dealer, he then became a lighterman on the Thames before he stated the family business.  My GT GT Grandfather was born in 1861, married a Susan Tucker in 1844. I think he was born in Margate too.
The Burtenshaws are more difficult for some reason, and I had thought with a strange name it might have been easier, mind you there have been some odd spellings of the name!!
Thanks for your help, it confirms a few things I was unsure about.
You are a star!
Cheers

Hi Casalguidi,
You are right that was their ages in 1871, I am not too sure where their parents were born, but I believe the Wells family were from Margate, but I don't know when.  I have no idea at all about the Burtenshaws, but the info I have from the other census  suggests they were all in the Deptford area of London. Sorry I am such a dimwit, but all the family that could have helped are long dead, and they weren't into reminiscing much when they were alive!!
Thanks for your prompt reply too.
Cheers Celia
