Robina Hamilton Steel(e) had a daughter named Robina.  She is my husband's great grandmother.  I think this makes her Agnes' half sister.  I am currently on vacation but will look up my information when I get back home and then we could compare notes.
Sue

Thank you excel for the info you found and for providing the link to the free search on Scotlands people. I was unaware of this source and will therefore investigate it further.

I have since found out that James and Catherine's daughter Robina's middle name was Hamilton. I am a descendant of Robina's daughter Agnes Peden. I have completed their line but am also interested in obtaining info (marriages, death, etc.) for the other siblings of James Steel and Catherine Simpson.

Also, did you see any other McLeods there?
Sue

Dear Margaret
Visited yesterday, there are 2 marker stones with "J McL" on them. these were in amongst graves dated around 1860. The grave next to these is for the 'Traill' family. Interestingly David's son Sinclair was married to Elizabeth Johnstone, her mother was Elizabeth Traill.
I don't know why there were 2 stones. There may be 2 plots, perhaps my question below answers this.
Can you confirm that John's father was a John McLeod Married to Mary Fraser. They Were from Inveresk and and a son William in 1790. They were married in North Leith in 1787.

I have long since suspected that these are indeed the parents of Alexander, Sinclair, George, John and William but have been unable to find documentation.  I have tried many times to go through the naming pattern to see if I could come up with anything.  My husband's mother and aunt, who were born in Edinburgh have sworn that the family originated from the Isle of Skye.  I have yet to find the connection, but suspect that it may begin with John/Mary having migrated from there.  I don't suppose the J McL had any dates on them?
