1881 john is with mom hannah barlow b1854 bedworth warwichshire and thomas born 1879 and mary a no age listed, hannah is a boatwoman and says she is married so husband must be on another boat somewhere ;D

That fits exactly with the info I have been given from elsewhere - thank you. Mary Ann was their daughter who was born in 1881. She died quite young in 1908. I have a picture of her as a young woman. Hannah's maiden name was Compton.

in 1891 hannah barlow (nee skinner) is with husband john b1853 bedworth and children joseph b1875, lucy b1884, elizabeth b1882,

very confusing census has there is a note next to each name saying skinner even john barlow but it also says theresa barlow is john's wife with skinner next to it i think teresa is hannahs sister,

the skinners are a family of boatmen too

This Hannah Barlow is a different one! (It does get confusing!).  Hannah Barlow (nee Compton) married Thomas Barlow (no date yet) and her sister Mary Ann Compton married Thomas Barlow's brother, Samuel Barlow (1847 -1894) - the originator of the Barlow barge company. I haven't come across a Teresa though, or any mention of Skinner.

I have been given a lot of info of who's who in the family that I'm working through, but have not yet looked at any census information to firm it all up. Your help in this is much appreciated. Thanks a lot.  :)

Thanks Kerry. There is loads on the 'net about 'The Barlows' but unfortunately there were a lot of different family members doing different things with different 'Barlow' companies!

I have found loads of info since my first visit here and am meeting up with a Barlow family archivist (who i met online) next week! His grandma is my great grandfather's little sister. These siblings had the original Samuel Barlow as their Uncle. Samuel Barlow's brother Thomas was their father, and he ran his own Barges under the Barlow name. My parents even dug up a Photo of two of Thomas Barlow's barges taken pre WW1 - one of which my gran was born on in 1904.

My Great grandfather, John 'Big Jack' Barlow married Mary Ann Humphries around the turn of the century (dates not confirmed yet) and the Humphries were apparently a barge family who worked for the Barlows - so that fits. Mary Ann died on Oct 9th 1925, aged 53. Any info on her family would be great.

Hi again

I asked for some info on the Barlow's earlier and also posted this picture - wondering if anyone recognised the barge:

Since then I've met an expert on the Barlows, who also has contacts to identify boats. He has told me that:

Quote
The barge is the HAROLD and it was built in 1911 and registered at Coventry No. 365 on the 13th February 1911 for John Ensor, proprietor of the Midland Quarry Company of Tuttle Hill, Nuneaton. Her master was Thomas Bromage at first, but in later years John Finch then Charles Ward worked her.

Although I can't see a direct link to my family, someone else might find this information useful.

Hi again

Thanks for the replies. Here is the only photo I have here at the moment, that has both a barge and people on it.

http://www.t20suzuki.com/cz/barge.jpg

The writing on the barge is hard to decipher, but the bottom word is definitely 'Nuneaton', the top word(s) being 'Johnson' or 'John?Ensor'. These have no link to any of my family tree, but were perhaps friends of the family? Most of the other photos and postcards are of canals or locks with no boats or people on them!

I'm trying to get any info I can on the Barlow Family. My Grandma Hannah Barlow was born on 31st March 1904 on board a Canal Boat near Watford, but the family were from Fazeley/Glascote near Tamworth, Staffs. Her father John Barlow is listed as the Captain and owner, and he lived at 19 John Street, Glascote, Tamworth. He was a huge man (height-wise) and was called 'Big Jack' by everyone. I believe that he was the son, grandson, or nephew of Samuel Barlow founder of the Samuel Barlow Coal Co in 1867. Sam Barlow had a son who worked for him called John Barlow, but I can't find any more details than that.

There is quite a lot about the company on the internet, such as this:

http://models.bipolar4all.co.uk/samuel_barlow_coal_carrying_co.htm

but none giving much more detail.

Any help or pointers welcomed.

Thanks
Adrian

Hi all

I'm new to this forum, but got here via a Google search. I'm a direct ancestor of Samuel Barlow - the founder of the Samuel Barlow Coal Co who had quite a big fleet of boats, based in the Midlands.  My Grandma Hannah Barlow was born on a barge on the grand Union Canal and her family were all bargees. Her father John Barlow was a huge man, known as 'Big Jack', although I haven't yet pinned down his details. I have photos though. She talked to me for hours about her life on the boats, and it has always fascinated me. The family was based in Fazeley, Staffs, and my Gran settled in Wilnecote near Tamworth

I'd love any info on the Barlow family, and any pictures too. We have a few old photos of barges and canals from the early 1900s, but can't identify anyone on the barge pictures...

Hope you can help!
