Armagh / Re: James MOODY from 1753 Co. Armagh Poll Book
« on: Saturday 29 September 12 18:41 BST (UK)  »
Thank You "kinkerswell" for the info. My apologies for being so long in responding to your info. I appreciate you taking the time to do that look up for me.
As we have found more and more info in regards to the Lisraw (we've seen so many variant spellings on this place), MOODY's, it does appear that we may have a Genealogical link to this branch.
I just wish we could find out if the family came to Nor. Ireland from Scotland or England, that could be a big breakthrough for us if we could.
However, until then, we appreciate every bit of help we get.
Cheers.

For "irenaf"
Apologies for being so long getting back to you on the Ydna thing.  Here is a link to our MOODY (all spellings) Ydna Surname Project page.  We use the FTDNA labs and they give us a special rate if you test through this page.
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rwmoody/dna/moody_dna_project.htm

Our Administrator Bob Moody has a link on there to his email and you can contact him for any additional info you might wish to find out.  Its all very simple, private, etc.  Its a Great way to Finally Know which branch of Moody's (Moodie's/Mudie's) you really belong to.  I spent over 20 years looking into only 'English' Moody family trees because that's what I'd been told my family heritage was.  Well unless we belong to some really obscure branch, that is Not what they Ydna test results showed us.
Most all (if not all) of the English Moody's are of the R1b types of genetics...our Moody's are "I1d" haploType (they call it) and Dr. Ken Nortdvedt who has spent a great amount of time and research on the HaploGroup "I" folks said that our "I1d" group is definitely of a Norwegian background somewhere waaaay back in time.  We do NOT match to any of the English branches of Moody's and tons and tons of them have been ydna tested.
So my gut instincts, as I've said, until proven otherwise is that my own branch of the Moody tree came from Orkney back when it was settled by the Norwegians and that my tree came to Nor. America by way of Nor. Ireland, or directly from Scotland.
Thats what I'd like to find out.
Anyway, I hope you will be able to get a male born Moodie/Mudie from your family to agree to take the simple Ydna test (cotton swab to inside of your mouth) is all you do and mail it back post paid and that's it. They will email you the results and your all important HaploType which I of course will be hoping will show up as "I1d" and a  match to our "beige" group in our ever growing Moody Ydna Surname project group.
Take care and if you should learn more or I do about our Moody/Moodie/Mudie families, I'll be back to post about it and I would also appreciate anything you might find out as well.
 Cheers!

In Reply to "Irenaf" and "Undertaker",
Thank you both for your great information that you shared.  I am still Very Much interested in finding more connections.
Another "genetic" cousin's family claims to have come to No. Ireland from either the Fifeshire area of Scotland or the Dundee area of Scotland.  Her ancestors settled in the Magilligan, Co. L'derry, N. Ire. area which is waaay up to the north of the country.
The earliest records of Baptism at the Ballykelly Presbyterian Church where her family at one time attended had their name spelled as MUDIE and variants thereof.  I have been told or actually read in an old MUDIE family book that the orig. spelling of our name was (well, the oldest spelling consistently found on record) was MUDIE and that the variant spelling of MOODIE came after sometime around the 1600's.  However I don't have whatever that books author used as a Source to back up this claim.
We now have two confirmed Ydna (genetic) Moody/Mudie/Moodie ancestors...the earliest Proven one still remains our Thomas MOODY b.c1710 in/of Aghadowey, Co. L'derry, Nor. Ireland who married 1st to Jean McQUISTON/McCuison (many various spellings from McWHISTON to Uisdean back through time).  The other genetic ancestor is Alexander MOODY b.c1745 in/of Lenamore/Magilligan, Co. L'derry, No. Ireland who married Priscilla DICK.
They had a son John MOODY who m. Mary HOPKINS and also a son Israel Moody who m. Elizabeth CASKEY (McCaskie...again, various spellings) and they removed to Kings Co., Nova Scotia in 1841.
This family was definitely said to have come from Scotland (Fife or Dundee areas or perhaps both).
Our dna says we descend from the Norwegians which the MOODIE's of Orkney also claim.  I have always maintained that my gut feeling is that my branch descends from the Orkney MOODIE's.
Hopefully one day we will know precisely where my father's family came from early on.
The most common first names in our Ydna family lines are Thomas, William, Alexander, John, Robert, Joseph, Daniel, David, Edward....
Thanks again for your help and info.

Armagh / James MOODY from 1753 Co. Armagh Poll Book
« on: Thursday 17 May 12 19:57 BST (UK)  »
From a listing of a 1753 Lisraw(didn't see an entry for this place under the main listing of counties for Ireland here, maybe today its known by another name, but this is what it says from the year 1753) - on a Poll Book listing for Lisraw in 1753 a James MOODY appears and it says out beside his name to the left - 615- L10 and then to the right of his name it says Lisraw (spelled just like that) and beside that is the letter "C" .  (can anyone tell me what the "C" means?)
What I am trying to determine is, does anyone have any info past 1753 of a James MOODY in Lisraw?  I can't seem to find him listed there anymore, OR is he the Rev. James MOODY who was in Newry, Co. Down?    I am wondering if this James Moody in 1753 Lisraw, ~might~ be my 5th grt. grandfather. There seems to be no records of him in the U.S. that I can clearly determine so I am only guessing that he must have emirgrated to the U.S. sometime around c1750 and up to c1773. We have Ydna proof of a link to Moody's from Lenamore/Magilligan and from Ballymoney, Co. Antrim.
Any info regarding any James MOODY's in Lisraw, Co. Armagh, No.  Ireland after 1753 would be Greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Very interesting reading. We have a Ydna (genetic) match to an Alexander MOODY who married a Priscilla DICK and they lived in Lenamore/Magilligan, Co. L'derry, Nor. Ireland. Alexander was born around c1746 we guess.
They had a son John MOODY who married a Mary HOPKINS and there is a great deal of information about them on line.
Ironically, some of their children (John's and Mary's) removed to Australia living in the Adelaide and Kapunda areas of South Austr. as well as some in other areas too.
This makes me wonder if there is a link somehow to your Moody and Dick family?
There was a John MOODIE/Moody early on in Co. Armagh, Nor. Ireland who married an Elizabeth SHANNON and they had a son who became the Rev. James MOODY b.1705 of the Presbyterian Church in Newry, Co. Down, Nor. Ireland.
Again there is a lot of info posted about hiim as well. Rev. James Moody married Frances KENNEDY daug. of the Rev. Gilbert Kennedy and Elizabeth LAING/Lang.
We have already proven via documentation a link to this line of MOODY's but so far have no real Ydna / Genetic Proof.
Thanks for posting this info and perhaps one day we will find there IS indeed a link between our families.

Antrim / John MOODY b.c1838 named in Matthew Moody's will
« on: Monday 18 July 11 16:47 BST (UK)  »
I am searching for the family link to a John MOODY b.c1838 or before, but who was certified to be of at least 21 yrs. of age from Matthew Moody's will of Cullyvenny, Co. L'derry in 1860.
John MOODY of Ballymoney, Co. Antrim, blacksmith/farmer was named as one of the Executors of Matthew's will which was dated Sept. 1860. (see Co. Derry page here where Matthews family is buried at Ballylaggan Reformed Presby. Churchyard)  I am trying to determine if this John MOODY of Ballmoney was perhaps a young son of Matthew and Mary (nee ARCHIBALD) MOODY's of Cullyvenny OR Matthew's nephew, which might indicate that Matthew had a brother named James MOODY who was a weaver in Balnamore, Co. Antrim of whom we know for a fact we link to. (documented genealogy and via Ydna results)
We have ties to a John MOODY of Ballymoney/Balnamore, Co. Antrim b.c1835 (so close enough to be the John Moody b.c1838 who was named in Matthew's will), who married Mary Ann LESLIE and we know that our John's father was a James MOODY, weaver in Balnamore, Co. Antrim.  James MOODY's birth was estimated to be around c1808 so this James could be a brother of Matthew's of Cullyvenny, Co. L'derry who was born around c1795 (from gravestone info in Ballylaggan).
We have a record of a Mary Jane MOODY whose fathers name was John MOODY of Ballymoney, and Mary Jane married William HOGG in the Trinity Presby. Church in Ballymoney in June of 1883.
William's parents were named as Andrew HOGG and Eliza (Elizabeth) CONNOR of whom we cannot find anymore information about either.
However, if this Mary Jane MOODY daug. of John MOODY b.c1835 links back to the Matthew Moody of Cullyvenny then we have another link in our branch of the Moody family which would be a great puzzle piece to fill in for us.
Can anyone here help us?  Thank You very much for anything regarding these folks.

Thank You So Much Aghadowey, this is a great wealth of info and is extremely helpful to us researching this line.
I had my suspicions that Matthew's wife was nee ARCHIBALD but couldn't prove it from the lack of info I had....thanks to you, it has now been taken care of.
I really appreciate your efforts so much.
