Europe / Re: Sully sur Loire death record?
« on: Tuesday 09 July 24 16:53 BST (UK)  »
Again, thanks for the input....and thanks for the local French death database. Trawled but nothing! The fact that his letters are directed only to his mother and siblings may indicate that his father was dead! That takes me to a Major Apollos Morris who relinquished his commission to travel to America and mediate (his interaction with George Washington is published). There is a newspaper record (attached) but I've nothing thereafter ( prisoner, collaborated with the Americans, Admirals ship at Spithead). It reports that he was 'late of the 27th' (latterly Inniskilling) but not comes up on the current website archive search. It looks like the only way I can progress is through muster roles and/or people with much more expertise than I! Guidance would be much appreciated!

Thanks everyone. This has been a long and frustrating project! I've been collaborating with family trying to identify the Morris family of Derry. Apollos wrote a stream of personal letters to his Mother and siblings. I've put a tree on Ancestry named 'Apollos Morris' that will search to the  letters. Your replies are correct...hopefully the tree will clarify. I'll follow up on the death...it was only to hope for clues on his origins. Lots of theories but no evidence!!!!

Europe / Sully sur Loire death record?
« on: Saturday 06 July 24 18:39 BST (UK)  »
I'm researching Lt. Appolos Morris born c.1780 in Derry. Served in the Peninsular wars, POW Verdun, then St. Helena with the 66th guarding Napoleon. He returned to England but shortly after took residence in France. His will indicates that he died 16 October 1822 at Sully sur Loire, Centre Val de Loire. I've done all the usual online searches for his death without success! Is anyone able to help with the death in France and any surrounding information? Happy to provide any information that I have.

Thanks for your advice. I just thought the more info, the quicker I may receive the records.

World War Two / Coldstream Guards Service number search
« on: Thursday 12 October 23 17:32 BST (UK)  »
I'm researching my late uncle, George Clark's service in the Coldstream Guards and wish to apply for his service record. It would help greatly if I could provide his service number. He was born 25 Feb 1921, registered Tynemouth. I'm confident that he joined the Coldstreams prior to WW2 as I recall my late mother, his sister, saying that the family were visited by a recruiting sergeant and his father had to sign his agreement. He served throughout WW2. There may be a record out there for 1936-1938, Record set Coldstream Guards 1800-1981. I'd appreciate anyone able to access such a record and let me know what it reveals! Any other suggestions that may help to build the picture would be much appreciated.

World War One / Re: Private Arthur Stevens, Devons and Labour Corps.

Ironic...he gets through all of that 'without a scratch', then suffers an illness and dies, far from home, after the event. I have to wonder when his wife would have learned of his death? Would she have been ecstatic, being told that it was all over so she could expect his return, only to be told later that she was a widow?
