One Name Studies: A to G / Re: Fleetham family history
« on: Friday 21 September 12 07:56 BST (UK)  »
I have a Mabel Dorothy Fleetham on my tree,
born 1902, Melbourne, died 1981, Melbourne.
Her father, John Robert Fleetham, was killed
in a work accident in 1917, Melbourne. Her
mother Jean Phoenix (nee Clark) died in 1928. One
of Mabel's brothers was Harold Wilson Fleetham,
who died of wounds received at Gallipoli in 1915.
Mabel's first husband, George Richard Moody, died
in 1925, aged 21. They had a daughter Jean Annetta,
born in 1925. Mabel married, second, 1933, George Albert
Hinshelwood, who was killed in a bicycle accident
in 1939. Mabel married, third, 1940, William Joseph Brown.

Dear Jill,
I am distantly related to your William Cartwright Fisher.
It might be that he married Edith Sophia Webb in Bloemfontein,
because of the following entry from the index of wills:
1885
FISHER, William Cartwright. Personal Estate 1684 pounds 16s 1d.
13th July.
The Will of William Cartwright Fisher formerly of Bloemfontein
in the Orange Free State South Africa Sub-Manager of the National
Bank of the Orange Free State Limited but late of Elm Cottage
Tiverton in the County of Devon who died 8 April 1885 at Elm
Cottage was proved at the Principal Registry by Edith Sophia
Fisher of 43 Howard-road Dorking in the County of Surrey Widow
the Relict the sole Executrix.

I have more information on this family. Please send me a personal
reply.

Regards,
Donald Cartwright

Dear Kerry,
I believe that I am related to the John and Eliza Cartwright
of your posting, being a great great grandson of John's brother William
Ambrose Cartwright (the William in the 1841 census household posted by
Suz). I have a great deal of information on this family, which I would
be happy to share with you.

John and Eliza had various children in Australia, including an Elizabeth
Hannah, who married Francis Lewis SMITH in 1875. Perhaps that is where
you fit in, Kerry, in which case we are very distant relatives.

Some of the postings by you, Suz and Brie ask about John and Eliza
emigrating. I believe that they sailed to Australia on the "Earl
of Charlemont", which was wrecked on the coast of Victoria, Australia,
near Barwon Heads. There is a web page concerning this wreck at
http://www.zades.com.au/bellhs/shipcha1.html
This includes a list of passengers, including John and Eliza, and their
infant son James. The ship left Liverpool on March 13, 1853 (6 days after
James's baptism in Loughborough). Fortunately all aboard were rescued.
There are newspaper articles from the time describing the wreck and
the subsequent inquiry.

Regards,
Donald
