Thank you for sharing this. I feel horrible that my family participated in this tragic situation.

My 3 x Grt Grandparents were:
Edward CHANTLER /CHANDLER (1792-1869) & Martha Knight of Hamsey, Barcombe, Lewes Sussex Co.

I have record of Edward's parents as
Edward CHANTLER/Sarah SMITH and names of their other children. However after several years of searching, I cannot find any mention anywhere of Edward's or Sarah's parents.  ???

There was an OCT 1731 marriage of Thomas CHANTLER of Newick &  Elizabeth HILLS of Barcombe in St Mary's that I thought might be a possibility but I can find no other connection to Edward or any other children.
Would appreciate any ideas or direction.

Below is the only info I have.

Edward CHANTLER
Born: in: Hamsey, Sussex
Married: 10 Oct 1788 in: Barcome Sussex Co.
Died: in: Sussex
Wife: Sarah SMITH
Died in Sussex

thanks so much!

Tipperary / Samuel Chandler/Mary Mitchell

I am looking for any information on my lost family members. My GGGrandfather Samuel Chandler (1819-1852) was a soldier.    Army records show that he joined the 35th Regiment of Foot (Royal Sussex) at Lewes in 1839.    Between 1841 and 1846 he served in various locations in Ireland including Carlow and Clonmel  in the south,  Carrick on Suir on the north west coast, Youghal and Charles Fort in County Cork, Templemore and Nenagh in County Tipperary.   During this time he married Mary Mitchell in Ireland.    In July 1846, Samuel was posted to Jersey, the largest of the Channel Isles.   In September, their son and my GGrandfather William H. Chandler (1846-1909) was born in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary.  A further son, James Chandler (1847-?) was born in Jersey.  There was also a sister, Mary Jane.  Unfortunately, Samuel died at Stoke Damerel Military Hospital, Devon in 1852.

William H. Chandler emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1873 but we have no family history of what happened to his mother Mary Mitchell (or her family), his brother James or sister Mary Jane. I have been searching for information for many years and would appreciate any help or guidance. Thank you.

Hello Alan,
Thank you for responding.

The one thing a couple of us noticed with your research was that you had not made a final determination as to whether Mahalah Chandler, my g-g-g grandmother and daughter of Edward Chantler and Sarah Smith is one and the same with your Mahala Muggridge.

We're glad to share any information that you wish and if it turns out she is the same - we would love to include your Muggridge history.

When you stop juggling, I will look forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes,

Carol Chandler

Alan, I believe you are related to our Chantler/Chandler's. I am also descended from Edward and Sarah Smith and Mahalah was their daughter. If it is the correct Mahalah, you might be interested in checking out our new Facebook page to research our family under Chandler of Sussex Research Group.

Or you may just write to me.
