Norfolk / family name ELWIN
« on: Tuesday 20 April 10 10:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone
Does anyone have any connections to ELWIN'S in Norfolk. Got back as far as 1830, but have not found anyone who has ELWIN ancestors before that.
Found a couple of Elwin's in Historical directories, trying to link them to my family.
My last ancestor I have is JAMES ELWIN married a MARY ANN ALTHORPE in 1830.
Census says he was born in Cantley, cannot find birth/baptism for him.
He died in 1872 age 71,which makes his birth year around 1801.
He was a Baker by profession, and others I have found in directories are also Baker's.
Another James Elwin in 1802 Thomas Peck Directory (Baker) 45 pottergate street.

Peter Elwin 6 Fishgate
Robert Elwin 2 Hungate street
Both were Baker's, listed in 1783 Chase Directory.

Any help appreciated.

Hi Deb
Yes I am the daughter of Charles & Daphne, what is your sister's name.
I will try and put photo of Robert on here at weekend, also I have photo of Stephen,Robert's brother.
Do you have access to Genes Reunited,I do not go on there as much as I used to. Have not updated tree for a while.
You seem to have as much trouble with your relatives as I do with my dads family,my dad lost contact with his family, and the consequences were we never met any of his relatives, and we have no photos of any.

LAND was my mum's maiden name.
She has one brother,STEPHEN  LAND,and a sister Florence (Betty) ELIZABETH BARKS(LAND)
There dad was ROBERT SAMUEL LAND,there mum MARY ELWIN.
Robert had three brothers I know of:
CHARLES,WILLIAM & STEPHEN JOSEPH. Stephen married another Elwin sister,FLORENCE

There mum & dad were STEPHEN JOSEPH(absconder) & HARRIET PHOEBE OXBOROUGH.
Stephen had a brother WILLIAM & a sister SUSANNAH.

If you cannot go on Genes site,I can write up what I have in more detail later if you want  and e-mail it to you.

I did think of Benjamin, burt was not sure, the beginning of the name threw me,because not sure if the capital letters at the front was one letter or two separate ones.
And I see where you are coming from with the four witnesses, and the possibility of 'Pearlman'.
Any more ideas keep,them coming.
Thanks for help.

2nd one baffles me,surname looks something like BUTTLE, but the first name has lost me.
Thanks sheila

Hi Deb
No I have not got very far, only know there grandfather WILLIAM LAND married a SUSANNAH DUFFIELD. William's dad was also a WILLIAM LAND, his mum was a MARY but not sure what her surname was.
I belong to Genes Reunited,so will try to find out more on there.
Do you have any photos of any LAND'S, I have one of my Grandfather Robert, and his brother Stephen. But not of any others. Could you e-mail any you have to me,or post them on here,I have not tried attaching anything on here yet.

Hi Deb
Has your family had any other rumours of his disappearance,I have looked on Passenger lists, but cannot find anyone I think is him. Trawled through the BMD deaths. What else can you do? If he went to another country,I wonder where he would have gone.
Please keep in touch if you have any ideas.
Regards Sheila
