Occupation Interests / Re: Do you have corkcutter ancestors?

Cheryl,
Any chance I can find out what you know in the database about my ancestors:  Terence McGuire born 1856, listed as a Cork Cutter, and Philip McGUIRE, cork cutter master (as of 1856).  I'd be especially interested in where they worked and when.

I'd also like to add 2 more to the database:
James McGuire, born 1838 Woolwich, cork keeper (in 1861 census)
William McGuire, born 1845 London, cork cutter (in 1861 census)

FYI, these four are all from the same family: the father Philip and his 3 sons.

Thanks.
Margot

Cheryl,

Two more:

Philip McGUIRE,  cork cutter master
Source: listed as cork cutter on his son Terence's birth certificate March 16, 1856, 10 Bow St, Salford.

Terence McGUIRE, cork cutter
Source: listed in 1905 on his daughter's marriage certificate as "cork cutter (deceased)"
(In 1879, 1881 and 1891, he lived in Wigan but I only have his occupation for 1881 - coal miner).

The 1869 Wigan Directory lists McGUIRE and BURNS as cork cutter/ manufacturers at 6 Warrington Lane, Wigan.  Do you know their forenames?  I would love to know if McGUIRE was in fact Terence McGUIRE.

Thanks.

Margot

You guys are wonderful!  :D :D :D  Thanks for all the lookups.

I don't have Eliza's marriage certificate (she was married in Montreal, Canada) but I will get a copy from the vital statistics office.

Also, the Eliza Hollingsworth birth certificate in Q3 1890 sounds interesting.   If I can confirm her age from the marriage certificate, then I'll order the birth certificate.

I'll let you know what I get, but it might take a few weeks till I get these certificates..

In the meantime, thank you once again - I am truly bowled over by everyone's generosity with their time and ideas!

Family lore says that Kate's maiden name was Feeley.  Another source says she was born in Bradford, YKS, not Darlington, DUR (so there's another inconsistency to figure out).   Could FEELEY be the surname in the 1891 census in Middlesborough, rather than FLETCHER?

I got the page from the 1901 census-  William is in fact listed as age 31 (not 51 as I'd expected).  His wife is 29, and children aged 10, 7 and 2 (which is about what you'd expect of  a couple aged 31 & 29, not 51 & 29).   I'm beginning to think like the possibility of there being 2 Williams - one married Kat from Darlington and the other married Kate from Bradford.  HOLLINGWORTH was a common name in Derbyshire.

Thanks to all of you -- Casalguidi, Heather B, Paul E -- for all your lookups and helpful ideas.

Durham Completed Look up Requests / 1891 census lookup please: HOLLINGWORTH

I am seeking William HOLLINGWORTH on the 1891 census.  He would be about 40 years old, probably married to Kathleen, and may have a daughter Eliza aged under 2 years.

He was born in Smalley, DBY, but may have moved to Elton by 1891.

Thank you in advance to any kind soul willing to do a lookup.
