Armed Forces / Re: Second Anglo-Afghan War 1878-80
« on: Tuesday 16 March 10 14:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I have just found the miltary records of my great grandfather Charles Clark and found that he served in South Afghanistan between 1878 -1880. He was awarded the Afghan medal.  Prior to that he was based at Camp Ghariel, Murree then Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Nowera, Dera Ismail Khan and Multan.  His campaigns are listed as Afghanistan and what looks like "LuaRin Expedition" - any ideas about this would be welcome.
Following his time in Afghanistan he was based at Subathu and Umballa and two other place names I cannot as yet decipher before returning home via 'Messiyeh'? Egypt on the troopship HMS Himalaya (September 1884).
If anyone could help me fill in the details, it would be much appreciated, thanks.

Suffolk Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Richard Burgess - Framsden - 1787/1852
« on: Friday 18 February 05 16:02 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks Rick - brilliant
That answers a couple of questions I had - firstly I couldn't understand Richard being a "pea dealer" - sounded odd, but "tea dealer" makes sense cos his son John was a commercial traveler in tea!  Also the information fits in perfectly as I found Mary as a widow of 84 in the 1871 Census living with her daughter Marcella and family.
Thanks again
Wendy

Suffolk Completed Lookup Requests / Richard Burgess - Framsden - 1787/1852

Any information, please, regarding Richard (shopkeeper 1831 and pea dealer in 1841) and Mary BURGESS.
Richard was born in Norfolk (Taverham) in 1787 but was living in Framsden in 1831/41/51.

He had two children - Marcella and John Thomas - and I think died in 1852.
Thanks

Suffolk Completed Lookup Requests / Ives - Laxfield 1813 - 1880 approx

Hi
Can anyone see if they have any information on Charles Ives, a currier (leather worker) of Laxfield.  I have found trace of him in the 1844 Laxfield (Hoxne Hundred) directory, I think he was born in 1813 at Worlingworth, married to Mary??? (born 1810 ish in Fressingham) and probably had two children - Walter Henry in 1840  and Louisa S(?) in 1849.  Mary died in 1872. Charles is still around in 1871, but after that I lose him.

I think Charles' father may also have been a Charles, but not sure.

Any confirmation would be really helpful - thanks

Norfolk / Lucy Potter - Norwich - from 1838 to 1870
« on: Monday 31 January 05 23:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
Can anyone help with details of my gggrandmother Lucy Potter.  She married John Thomas Burgess in Norwich in 1867 then seems to have moved to Birmingham.  I have information she was born in Norwich about 1838.  By 1881 she was a widow and a lodging house keeper, back in Chapel Fields, Norwich
Thanks
Wendy
