New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: William Elmer Long
« on: Monday 01 August 16 14:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I have a photograph of Robert Joseph Elmer when he was about 10 years old.  His aunt, Sarah Long, was my husbands Great Grandmother.  Robert and Sarah's mother and father both came from Norfolk.  I have been trying to find out more about the NZ branch of the family and have some information regarding William Elmer Long, but I cannot find when he married Sophia.  It must have taken place in England but no luck so far.  Also Robert had a sister called Patricia, again I have no information about her at all, I have the same problem with Edith, Robert's sister.

Have you any information you could share?

One of my ancestors, William Jenkins, is mentioned in the 1841 census as being in St. Thomas Hospital in South London.  Is there any way of finding out why he was there, how long he was there, and when he would have been discharged?

Hi,  my husband's gtgt grandparents were also Francis Dickson and Mary Hutton.  I have just started looking into this in more detail.  His gt grandmother was Mary Ann Dickson, she married a Yorkshireman and moved there.

I have also come across a Prison Register Index search result for Francis Dickson, a coal miner living in Canonbie (so I am assuming it is the same person as above) who was jailed in 1846 when 21. NRS reference HH21/49/2 p44.  I havent sent off for the  full information yet, do you know anything about this?
I havent found his marriage yet but I assume it was before 1850 as his first child was born then.  So he was not in prison for long!

Any info welcome and would be happy to give you anything I have that you may not have come across.

London and Middlesex / William, Eliza, Ellen and Winifred DAVIES
« on: Wednesday 07 October 15 15:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi
William, born in London and Eliza (formally Sweeny, born in Dublin) had several children after marrying in Dublin.  They were living in London in 1871 (census).  After moving to London they had twins Ellen and Winifred in 1868, born in Horselydown, Southwark. (1881 census).  However I cannot find either Ellen or Winifred in any of the births.  I can find Ellen's marriage (to George Kitson in 1889) and her death in 1893.  I cannot find a marriage for Winifred.  It is also difficult finding a death for Eliza and even more so for William (mainly due in this case to his name being fairly common)!

Any ideas please.

I have now discovered that William Elmer Long was a steward on the vessel Ophir in 1901 (English census records).  He served as a steward, at the time the vessel was being used as a Royal Yacht.

I notice that in the newspaper report it stated that he had been a steward on a New Zealand shipping line before he retired, so he kept his occupation.

Still cannot find marriage in either country, or any trace of Patricia!  I also cannot find his emigration record, perhaps he jumped ship!

On the census it states that he was single at the time.  So marriage should be between 1901 and 1913 I think.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: Charles Rhodes

Thank you again.  Good idea looking at the wedding information.  Eva Rhodes (grandmother) married in 1919 and Charles was alive then, but by the time youngest daughter, Louie, married in 1924 he had died.  I looked him up and he died in February 1920, in Eccleshill.  Now all I need (?) to find is Mary Anns death, and where Charles was living between around 1911 and his death !!

I found Elizabeth Gascoigne, thank you but am just trying to chase up the other information you gave me.

Thank you for your replies.  His mother's name is Elizabeth, I have looked at some of the birth records on Ancestry but there seem to be a lot of Charles Rhodes, quite a lot in Bradford, (haven't found one for Oakenshaw yet) but none that list Elizabeth and Samuel as parents.  I will keep looking.  Life would be easier if he had a middle name but haven't found one yet!

He seems to be boarding in Eccleshill and is working as a gardener.

I am trying to sort out my husband's great grandfathers birth and death.  I know that he married Mary Ann Dickson from Scotland in 1882, in Eccleshill in Yorkshire.  I have him in the census returns of 1891 and 1901.  I am fairly sure it is him in the 1861, 71 and 81 census, but he gives a different birth place, tho all in Yorkshire, in most of them.  He is not on the 1911 census but his wife is and she says she is married not a widow.

I have looked up variations on his name but without a middle name it is difficult, has anyone any suggestions for finding his birth and death?
