Hi, and thank you all for your interest.
emeltom; Thanks for the link, I have emailed lyrs.org for info.
Mike; Thanks for a great map (which also shows my father's old school on Fonthill rd, now long gone), and some great information. You are quite correct regarding the long route to becoming a driver, and I can imagine him jumping at the chance for a cleaner job on electrics. My search request at Kew was cancelled, probably due to a poor understanding of the search requirements. They offered the services of a professional to do the checks but at an unspecified cost. I may travel down later in the year to try myself.
Thanks again all who have chipped in.
Peter.

Many thanks for your reply garstonite. He was a fireman on his marriage banns in 1914, and by the 1921Census a driver, ending his career in 1945 (heart attack) as an electric train driver. Shows up as such in the 1939 register. Unfortunately missing from the 1911 census despite many years search. I'm keen to know when he started with LYR, my father believed it to be around 1904. I have a search request at Kew at the moment, but their records are very limited.

Does anyone have a link to a railway society with an interest in this particular running shed? I am researching my grandfather who worked for the LYR from about 1910-1945.
Many thanks.

Thanks for sharing that cbowley, I hope you are successful with your search. Mine appears to be what they call a brick wall, and I'm not confident now of finding him.
