Hi Paula! Wow, it's been years! I concur with Mary marrying David Warr. She died two weeks after giving birth to her second (i think) child. Both her children died in infancy or were stillborn. David shows up in a 1798 land tax exemption report, where he is listed as the occupier of Rev. Denchfield's farm. I haven't looked for him beyond that.

Hi Caroll!
Your email prompted me to take a new look at these Denchfields. I'm concerned about your Mary. What evidence do you have that John and Elizabeth Brewer's daughter Mary married William Smith. Maybe if I start there I can figure out why I'm showing her married to someone else.

Cambridgeshire Lookup Requests / Re: lookup - Clement Okey, haddenham, ely

Thanks jbml, for bringing this thread to the forefront!  I'm also suspect of ages of death in burial registers and those carved into grave markers. But, in looking back through earlier posts, I see AnneB posted a transcript of a monument inscription for the Clement who died in 1838.

The text of the AnneB's transcription indicates this Clement was the son of Clement and Elizabeth.  My question, is that what was actually carved into the marker? If so, it would seem to support jbml's supposition that Ann, wife of Clement, not widow, must have been married to the OTHER Clement, son of John.  Am I on track with this thinking?

HI Michelle,

Thank you for the reply! I find the story of this house and the family quite facinating. I'm not sure what family history I need on this line, other than a general idea of what life for a servant in this household would have been like. I'll look through my notes this week for that ancestor and see if I have any specific questions. I'll take a look at Google as well

kind regards,
Claire

Hi All,

Another North Marston Denchfield post you might enjoy reading.

For a long time I've been stuck on the fact that John and brother Richard BOTH had sons named John, one born in 1714, the other in 1716. There's nothing in the parish register to indicate which one married Elizabeth Purchas in 1736, and I don't like basing my family tree on mere assumption. So......I've finally figured out which one, using land and probate records. The John Denchfield who married Elizabeth Brewer was the son of John Denchfield and Elizabeth Purchas. It seems like most online trees already had that connection, but no one had any definitive evidence. I wrote about how I arrived at this conclusion here.:

Now if I can just figure out what happened to the OTHER John.....he seems to have disappeared into thin air..  :D

Hello all  :D

I made an interesting Denchfield discovery yesterday- related to the marriage of John Denchfield and his second wife Awdry, you'll find my notes on it in a blog post here:

There's also a handwritten chart of the Denchfields of Whitchurch. A bit off topic, but you never know where a new clue might lead.  :D

Cheers,
Claire

Morning everyone!

I've added the transcription of the widow Mary (Gurney) Denchfield's will of 1817 to my blog.

 http://mahoganybox.net/2011/10/amanuensis-monday-1817-will-of-mary-denchfield-of-aston-abbotts/

In it she, the widow of John Denchfield, dairyman of North Marston, mentions all of their children (with the daughters' married names) including her daughter Ann, wife of William Baker. Yay!!!!!!! Finally, proof of Ann Denchfield's lineage Paula!!

I feel sure that an analysis of this record will put to rest the controversy of who bore all of John's children. Many online genealogies report that John had two wives named Mary and that both marriages had issue, but I think this will, along with indirect evidence from other sources, shows he had only one wife who was the mother of all his children.

Thank the gods for probate records!!

Wonderful photos Paula!!!  :)

I don't suppose any of the Denchfield stones were in good enough shape to read?  How awesome it would be to find a stone for someone who was buried on one of the torn out bits......  :-\

By the By, I got some Ingram wills in the mail.....I'm hoping they're relatives of the one or two who married Denchfields  :) :)

Hi everybody  :) :)

I'm still digesting Mary's will, but I just posted an earlier Denchfield will, John Denchfield, maltster, made in 1734.  It brings to light a bit of mystery involving the link between this John and John Denchfield, the iremonger, who I've thought for a long time was his father. Let me know what you think :-)

Here's the link
