Northumberland / Re: Illegitimate birth - any chance of finding name of father?
« on: Tuesday 29 June 10 22:47 BST (UK)  »
I was going through one parish in Norfolk where the rector at the time had recorded the name of the reputed father (and his abode and occupation) for each illegitimate birth.  Only one was silent altogether and another one had the father's name and occupation (soldier) but no abode as it wasn't known.  Not always that lucky though.

I've recently had to do a couple of updates in the event that my password has to be verified or recovered.  None of the questions now are about DOB or mother's maiden name.  There were three or four drop down menus, such as "Where did you go on your honeymoon?"  "What was the name of your first pet?"  Questions that were very specific, in other words, you wouldn't mix it up with your most recent pet.  On each drop down, you could choose your own question and fill in your own answer.  A fraudster who came along later would have to know you very well to have all three answers correct.

I'm still enthralled with this thread.  What a fascinating hunt.

Is there any possibility that he went to Canada or the United States after the war?  It would be relatively simple for a British subject to slip into Canada, especially if he had a useful skill.  Lots of British subjects also ended up in the U.S.

The Lighter Side / Re: Grave consequences!

How many people have been killed by gravestones? This really is carrying things too far. It's probably the same mob that piled up all the old gravestones into one heap at my former parish church! What an unsightly mess they made. There was quite some discussion about this problem on an earlier thread.

Regulations here in Ontario, Canada, require payment into a fund to maintain headstones in perpetuity.  This was done after a headstone fell on a child visiting a cemetery and killed her.  Apparently all members of the family were deceased, so there was no one to pay to fix the unstable headstone.

On another note, I paid a visit to my great-grandparents yesterday, and was horrified to discover the headstone broken off its base and lying on the ground.  I've already made a phone call for a quote about having it cleaned, freshened up and uprighted.  They're buried on hilly ground, so I guess it was only a matter of time.

World War One / Re: WW1 War Graves Desecrated Overnight.

No polite words can describe what I'm thinking right now.

A few years ago some teens were photographed urinating on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Ottawa, Canada.  The Canadian Legion was a lot more forgiving than I would be.  Offering an indignity to a body is a crime, and the aggravating circumstances in a war cemetery are at the high end.

Here's a link to the Canadian story:

Norfolk / Re: family research: surname RICHES located in NORFOLK
« on: Friday 18 June 10 22:00 BST (UK)  »
There was a birth registration for Florence C. Riches in the first quarter of 1835 in the Depwade registration district.  The mother's name is Gower.

By ordering a certificate through the GRo you should be able to get the full name of both her parents.

If you get desperate enough (you have to be desperate to do exactly what I did last night!!) - sit down for a few hours and actually read the indexes.

I pulled them up on FindMyPast and managed to "kill off" at least seven people that I couldn't find records for.  They were there in the indexes, but incorrectly transcribed by FreeBMD and the records weren't picked up by soundex searches.

The volunteer transcribers couldn't be blamed at all, in some cases "r" looked like "s" in the scans the transcribers were working from, but I happened to know who I was looking for, what I was looking for, and in what geographical area.

You can pull up the indexes for ten-year periods, just put in at least the first two letters of the name you're looking for.

Very tedious but worthwhile in the end.

As odd as it may sound, is it worthwhile researching some people who may have had access to the missing files?  Perhaps he had a friend in a military records office who was willing to dispose of any embarassing information?

The clue about who might not be immediately useful, but added to the other information you've accumulated, it might suggest a direction.

Canada / Re: Robert McCracken, what happened to you?
« on: Friday 18 June 10 13:41 BST (UK)  »
The grave of Robert McCracken who died in 1984 and is buried at Mountain View remains unmarked, according the the Mountain View site.  The Last Post Fund is raising money to mark all veteran's graves, and more than 900 remain unmarked:
