Essex Completed Lookup Requests / 1851 Look-Up request - Stambourne- for Staines
« on: Wednesday 11 May 05 23:05 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone please help me with an 1851, and later if possible, look-up for the following memebers of the STAINES (sometimes STANES) family. The data below is taken from the 1841 census for Stambourne:

Levitts Farm (about 1 mile SW of Stambourne towards Finchingfield).

L Staines, widow, age 45
David, age 24 ag lab
Thos age 22
John age 20
Sarah age 16
Samuel age 14
Jane age 12
David age 9
Chs age 7
George age 5
Mary ann age 3

HO 107 333 12

Stambourne, Essex

As far as I know all of the children were born in Finchingfield. Some were probably already married by 1851 and away from the family home but any help at all will be gratefully received.

Thanks very much.

Alan,

Thank you very much for that inforemation.

Obviously Sa(i)nes could be a mis-transcription for Sta(i)nes but I find it hard to believe that someone could mispronounce their name so badly that the census takes would miss the T.
But who knows? ???

Thanks once again for your time and effort.

Regards.

Renfrewshire / Cormie
« on: Tuesday 08 March 05 22:02 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for any information on a James Cormie and family.

The 1881 census data is as follows:

Dwelling:   9 Old Smithhills
Census Place:   Abbey, Renfrew, Scotland
Source:   FHL Film 0203584     GRO Ref    Volume 573    EnumDist 76    Page 11
      Marr   Age   Sex   Birthplace
James CORMIE   M   68    M   Kelty, Fife, Scotland
   Rel:   Head
   Occ:   Eating House Keeper
Martha CORMIE   M   54    F   Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland
   Rel:   Wife
   Occ:   Eating House Keeper
Christina CORMIE   U   28    F   Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland
   Rel:   Daur
   Occ:   Eating House Keeper
Maggie CORMIE   U   25    F   Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland
   Rel:   Daur
   Occ:   Spooler

I am 99 % certain that the birthplace of James Cormie should be Kettle, Fife and that Kelty is a mis-transcription somewhere along the line.

There were other Cormies living in and around Renfrewshire, especially Greenock and Kilmacolm, could they be related to this one?

Also could Cormie House, Residential Home in Paisley have some connection to this family?

I look forward to hearing from anyone who may have earlier and/or later census information or any other information and/or connection whatsoever.

Nort,

I copied this from a posting on the Rootsweb SCT-Fife List.

Kennoway was one of the parishes whose 1841 census was lost at sea on the way to Edinburgh.

The others were:

Abdie,  Abernethy(Perth), Auchtermuchty,  Balmerino, Ceres, Collessie, Creich, Cults, Cupar, Dairsie, Dunbog, Kennoway,  Kilconquhar, Kinghorn, Kinglassie, Kirkcaldy, Leslie, Tulliallan.

Thanks to Betty Scott who originally submitted it to the SCT-Fife List.

I hope that helps you.
