Hi Shane,

I have no idea but clearly some rule of that sort was in place.  They are all long gone now so no one to ask!

Hi Shane,

Thanks for your interest.

I have read that too but I have his service record here and he served at Tipperary, Cork, Clare, Donegal, Armagh, Antrim Tyrone and finally Cavan, he began his career as a Sub-Constable then Constable, 3rd Sub Inspector, 2nd Sub Inspector, 1st Inspector and finally in 1858 Extra Inspector.  He retired early due to injuries sustained when attacked by a Constable Holden, who also murdered an RIC sergeant.

Hi all,

I would like to find out more about William Hewetson Mathew, according to his RIC record he was born in Tipperary in 1804.  He joined the RIC in 1831 aged 27, and he was stationed in Tipperary for almost seven years before being moved to Cork.  He died at Belturbet in 1889.

Does anyone know anything about his parents/grandparents?

Very many thanks,

Glenn

No I don't think so but I know so little other than what I have posted that I can't be sure.

Thanks for your time and I'm sorry I can't help.

Down / Maxwell/Hamilton family, Newry.
« on: Thursday 21 January 10 20:39 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone shed light upon the Maxwell/Hamilton families below please as it is almost as if they have virtually dissapeared.

James Maxwell (1) of Keady, Co. Armagh

Youngest son was James Maxwell (2) = Elizabeth Hamilton (3)
Merchant of Market Street, Newry.

A son was

William Hamilton Maxwell (4) b. 1792. = Mary Dobbin (5) of Armagh.

Elizabeth (3) was one of at least five children born to William Hamilton Esq., (6) merchant of Greenfield, Newry, died 1779 and Martha ? (7) died 16th Jan 1765, she was said to have been buried amongst 14 of her children!

William (6) and Martha (7) had at least four other children that lived,

Jane (8 ) = James MacMeehan.

Martha (9) lived at Ballyedmund c. 1801.

Isabella (10) = ? Walmsley.

James (11) of Greenfield born 1744, died 9th Jan 1816 aged 72 = ?  died 22 Oct 1830 her body was reputed to have been stolen by body snatchers!

William Hamilton Esq (6) was the son of James Hamilton Esq (11) of Newry

James Hamilton Esq (11) had at least three sons, the third son was

Solomon Hamilton, (12) born 1750, he was admitted to the Inner Temple 1774.  At some time he moved to India where he was a puisne judge of the Court of India, he died at Calcutta 26/03/1820.

Soloman had at least one child, Eliza, (13) born in Co. Armagh 1796.  She was raised by her grandmother when her father left for India.

Eliza (13) married James Sylvius Law, astromoner, they had a son (?) and a daughter, Mary Sophia Georgiana, (14) born 1816 in Colerain.

Eliza kept her maiden name and secondly married David Dunlop (15) in Scotland.  They emigrated leaving Mary Sophia Georgiana (14) behind.

Eliza Hamilton Dunlop (13) is now known for her poetry and support of aboriginal rights.

Eliza (13) and David (15) both died in Wollombi, Australia.

Eliza once stated that the Maxwells proud heritage "was the sword" and both families were said to bear arms but I cannot find them.

I know quite a lot about William Hamilton Maxwell (4) and his literary career and his wife Mary(5) but does anyone know of the other family members here?

Many thanks

Glenn

Armagh / John Maxwell of Keady c.1809.
« on: Thursday 21 January 10 19:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone I am new to RootsChat and hope that someone might be able to help.  I do not have much information to go on and what I have comes from a deed dated August 1809 for the townland of Ballinacraig, between Lord Viscount Kilmorey and James Maxwell of Market Street, Newry. The deed gives permission for a house to be built.

It records that John Maxwell of Keady is the father of of James Maxwell and that James is the father of William Hamilton Maxwell b.1792.

I know quite a lot about W.H. Maxwell but nothing about John or James can anyone shed any light on them please?

Thank you.
