Aberdeenshire / Re: 1901 census lookup request Aberdeen, Torry, Murray
« on: Tuesday 18 April 06 18:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi, Mo.  My computer has been out of commission for a while, but now that I have it back and was able to check my posts and replies, I want to thank you for taking the time to look up my family in the 1901 census.  The information you provided really helps me with new avenues to pursue.....I  now know where my Great Uncle Thomas was born!
Again, many thanks for your help and willingness to look up my information.
Bonnie

Researching:  Jamie, Petrie, Murray, Gerrard, Gowans, Thomson, Graham, Marr (in Aberdeen, St. Monance, and Glasgow.)

Hi, Jean.  Many thanks for your reply.  My computer has been out of commission for a while, and so I have just gotten around to checking back on my posts.
I don't know if there is any connection here, but yours is the only lead I have!  I will certainly do some research and see if there is any commonality of names.  Though none of your names sound familiar at this time, who knows what might come up as I continue to do research!
Thanks again,
Bonnie

Lanarkshire / Re: The Gorbals, Glasgow (a place)
« on: Sunday 10 July 05 20:20 BST (UK)  »
My grandfather, Andrew William Murray, was apparently born in Gorbals (or Gobals?  Is there such a place?)  in Glasgow in 1897, street address 30 Main St.  From what I've read about the place, this doesn't seem to make sense, as his family was quite affluent - his father James Thomson Murray, from St. Monance, was a fish curer who owned his own business. I assume they were in Glasgow as part of his business. The next I can find them is in Torry, Aberdeen, in 1901, according to the census.
Was the Gorbals still an affluent area in 1897?  Is there an area of Glasgow known as Gobals?  Can anyone check out his birth records for me locally there?  His mother's name was Margaret Gerrard Murray, from St. Monance, Fife.
I am so confused!

Patsy - I just now found your reply, so am also late in getting back to you.
It's going to take me a while to absorb and process your information...it seems possible there's a connection somewhere along the line, but it sure isn't obvious at first glance.
I've got a George Graham, Gr-Gr-Uncle, born in 1841 in Abd, but I haven't been able to trace him back further than his father Daniel (sometimes listed as Donald) and mother, Johanna Fraser.  I suppose it's possible there's a George somewhere before Daniel, but I sure haven't found him yet.
I'll keep after this line, and let you  know if I come up with anything.

Fife / Re: GERRARD St Monance & Pittenweem

Hello, Peter.  I am connected to the Gerrards of St. Monance through my great grandmother, Margaret Gerrard, b. 1861.  She married James Thomson Murray.  Her father, I believe, was Andrew Gerrard.  James' parents were Thomas Murray and Jane Thomson.  The Murrays were in the fish curing business.  I would be anxious to know if we have a connection, and if I could ask you for some local history as well as family history.
Thanks!

Occupation Interests / Light porter draper and groom
« on: Monday 21 February 05 15:01 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me what would the occupation of "light porter draper" involve?  Also, what would a "groom" on the horse tramway do?
Thanks!

Scotland / 1891 census lookup, Glasgow and St. Monance, Fife
« on: Sunday 20 February 05 20:04 GMT (UK)  »
Could I please ask someone to do a lookup for James Thomson Murray (b. 1861 in St. Monance, Fife) in the 1891 census.  At that time, the family might have been living in either Glasgow or St. Monance, Fife.  If not found in either of those places, there is a possibility they might have been living in Aberdeen. His wife was Margaret Gerrard Murray.
Many thanks in advance for your help.

Aberdeenshire / 1901 census lookup request Aberdeen, Torry, Murray
« on: Sunday 20 February 05 19:58 GMT (UK)  »
I have been informed that my gr-uncle Thomas J. Murray appears in the 1901 census for Torry, Aberdeen.  I would be interested in the full details of that census entry.  He was born in about 1893 in (I believe) St. Monance, and his parents were James Thomson Murray and Margaret Gerrard Murray, both born in St. Monance.  Full script of that census entry would be very helpful to me!
Thanks.
