Armed Forces / James Hayes Regimental No 1401759
« on: Sunday 21 August 16 11:44 BST (UK)  »
We are trying to find information on the death of James Hayes. He was initially enlisted in the British Army in 1903 and transferred to the Royal Engineers in 1917.Having been discharged after WW1 he re-enlisted in 1910 at Whitehall and sent to Basra,Iraq where he was reported to have accidentally drowned on 5th May 1922 and registered on 22nd June 1922.
We would like to know the circumstances surrounding his drowning and any suggestions as to how we might proceed with this search would be very much appreciated.
Thanks for your interest    Gwenart.

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Re: Marriage of Robert Turner & Sarah Fuller
« on: Monday 29 February 16 10:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Claire,Thanks to your links we have found and printed the marriage certificate for Robert and Sarah. Very interested in the alias bit because there is a word there but we cannot be sure that it really says "alias". Trying to think what else it could possibly be because the whole Turner family name comes down from this.At the moment my mum might not have been a Turner at all !!!
Interesting isn't it?
Regards    Gwenda and Arthur.

Hello Claire (i included),Thank you again for your continued support and for providing the additional sites which may help in any future search. Using the new version of FreeReg we have now identified six possible Roberts and Five possible Sarahs with suitable baptism dates. All we have to do now is sort out the correct ones.
Although we have looked we cannot as yet find your marriage banns or references to Robert Daniel alias Turner.Mind you in communication terms we are probably closer to hammer, chisel and stone tablet than to computers but we do try.Any real progress we'll let you know.
Thanks again,   Gwenda and Arthur.

Hello Clare,Thank you so much for your prompt reply and it's given us a new resource since we had been using the old FreeReg since the new one doesn't allow you to change your options without starting anew. This has given us a new momentum and we've found several possible births for Robert so we must try to tie down which one is his. We are surprised just how many Turners there were in Norfolk at this time.
If you have any further suggestions they would always be welcomed.
Regards   Gwenda and Arthur Howard.

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Marriage of Robert Turner & Sarah Fuller
« on: Saturday 27 February 16 16:15 GMT (UK)  »
We are researching the Turners of Norfolk and can trace our line back to Jonathan Turner born 1790 in Diss and marrying Sarah Brock in 1811 Forncett and then settling in the Besthorpe area.
We have found Jonathan's birth through Archdeacons Transcripts which gives his parents as Robert Turner and Sarah Fuller but we cannot find a marriage date or a birth for either parent.
Can anyone please help with either the actual information we require or suggest a route by which we may find the missing information.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kent Lookup Requests / Howards Of Kent
« on: Tuesday 03 February 15 11:01 GMT (UK)  »
We have two streams of Howards to research and are trying to find a link. Both streams were in the barging industry and we have gone back to William Crump Howard 1764 Stifford,Essex although all his eight siblings were born in Stone next Dartford and Swanscombe.
We now know his father was Israel Howard 1743 who married Elizabeth Crump in 1763 in Swanscombe but cannot find his birthplace or his parents in order to see if the link with the Tower Hamlets/Bethnal Green stream exists at an earlier time and went on to produce James Howard c1770 who married Ann Simmons at St Brides,Fleet Street in 1793.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hi Jane, Sorry about the delay in replying but we've had our computer down. So thanks for your reply and your interest in our bargemen problems. Unfortunately no record of bargemen or barges sinking has yet turned up but we'll keep on trying something until we get a result.
Thanks again    Gwenart.

Hi Sandie,Nice to know we've got someone with 1800s barge knowledge on our side but can't believe that someone, somewhere didn't keep a record of barges that sank. One thing we can try is getting the Assoc. of Watermen and Lightermen to look through their records but firstly they say that none of their members would call themselves bargemen and secondly they charge £20-00 even if they don't find anything. But anyway we'll keep trying something.
Thanks for your interest.

Hi SandieP, Thanks for further attempts at helping but we had tried this site and also Society for Sailing Barge Research (SSBR)  but neither know of a source of barges which sank at particular times.
But it's lovely to have someone who cares enough to look for solutions and we're sure we'll get there in the end.  Thanks again
Gwenart.
