Hi JC,
Thanks for the info but I don't see a connection with Ann Stark. My great, great, great great grandfather James was born in 1779 and had only 2 sisters,Agnes and Nelly. Possible Ann is a cousin of his but no way to verify.

Hi Anne   Sorry, thought you'd seen the reply from Gadget saying he'd found a Nelson Morrell Thomson who died in 1982,aged 74. This has to be our Nelson,as the middle name is his mother's maiden name. My great aunt, who told us he died in 1973 must have the year wrong(she's in her late 80's)

Hello everyone,
I'm writing from Canada,my mother was adopted and we recently found out who my great, great grandparents were. Thomas Thomson and Janet Stark were married in Libberton/Biggar in May 1851. They came to Canada soon after ,we're looking for any ancestors related to the Thomsons. I have posted a letter under "Lanarkshire" topic heading regarding the Starks so this will deal with the Thomson side of the family.
We found Thomas in the 1841 census in Libberton and  also in the 1851 Census, where it says he was 22 years old and born in Culter,Lanarkshire. We can't find any birth records for him. In his Obituary from here in Canada, where he died on Mar 8th,1917 in Harriston,Ontario his parents are listed as Thomas Thomson and Jane Cassells. We can't find any record of his parents as far as birth, marriage or death are concerned, they don't appear on the 1841 Census. We hired a Geneologist who found that a Thomas Thomson was added to the poor roll on Apr 30th,1839,appears his parents had died by this date.
We do know that my great Uncle,Russell Thomson, travelled from Canada in 1973 to Stornoway in Scotland. He went there to settle the estate of a cousin,Nelson Thomson, who is apparently buried in Stornoway. Nelson had moved to Scotland from Canada to live with cousins in Stornoway, eventualy getting his own house there. Russell travelled to Stornoway in 1973 then along with Nelson's parents,George Thomson & Martha Morrell. While settling Nelson's affairs in Stornoway they also visited relatives in Paisley, but we don't know their names.
We're hoping that someone from Stornoway will recognize Nelson's name,I've posted a letter in the Stornoway Gazette and am planning on publishing another letter in that newspaper.
We are planning a trip to Scotland this fall and hope to find   places to visit of our Ancestors,as well as any present day relatives.

Hello everyone,
I live in Canada and we recently found out my great, great grandparents were from Scotland. Thomas Thomson and Janet Stark  were married in Libberton/Biggar in 1851,came to Canada soon after. Janet's parents were James Stark & Janet Barrie. James was born in 1779 in Carstairs,Lanark and died in 1864 in Parish Carnwath. Janet was born in 1785 and died in 1866 in Parish Carnwath. James parents were James Stark and Agnes Haddow, who had 2 other children,Agnes(born 1789) and Nelly(born 1767). Janet's parents were William Barrie(Barry) and Agnes Wier, who had 3 other children,Agnes(born 1771),Elisabeth(born 1797) and William(born 1792).
I've been trying to find the children of James and Janet, who are as follows:Agnes(born 1808),Helen(born 1810),Isobel(born 1829),John(born 1819),Thomas(born 1831) & William(born 1813). For example,I found a Thomas Stark on the 1881 British Census, aged 50,born in Lanarkshire. Unsure if he is the correct Thomas. I also found a William in the 1841 and 1851 Scottish Census and John in 1841 Scottish Census but still not 100% sure these are THE children. We did find Isabel Stark. In the Obituaries for both James and Janet Stark,a Thomas Bryce is listed as son-in-law under "Informant".I found a marriage record for Thomas Bryce and Isabel Stark,as well as the births of their children,John(born 1848) and Janet(born 1852) We have Thomas and Isabels' death records but can't find any further trace of their children,John and Janet.
We're looking for ANY further information, past or into the present on James Stark and Janet Barrie. We are planning a trip to Scotland this fall and would like to visit the home villages of our Ancestors, possibly any graves in parish churchyards etc. Plus if there are any other descendents of James and Janet ,and there must be,would love to meet.
                                                  Yours Truly,
                                            Siobhan Beeton
