.....walk slowly away from the Transcription site

Thanks Sue I'll add those in to my info and see where they lead.

The other option I have is the birth certificates of the children of the 2nd marriage but that gets a bit expensive, particularly as I'm really only interested in the address. Guess I could get a transcript service and only ask for minimal data which is a bit cheaper.

Hi Sparrett,
I've looked through the Sydney city Assessment book for that period for Nicol and Nichol and didn't find anything that matched.
I think Sands for Paddington Surry Hills area and Lower North Shore might be worth a look if you hve access to those but I wouldn't go any further than that.  In regard to Sands though, given they cover a greater period, his wife up until 1892 was Margaret then he married Hilda in 1893.

The spelling is a pain. He was definitely a Nicol but even on the shipping lists it's shown as Nicol on one and Nichol on the other. Both spellings were common and it depended on the experience of the writer. ( bit like my name with C and K). His full name was William Alexander.

Thanks Cando
I doubt that's him somehow. He was a ships engineer and worked for the Australian Steam Ships till around 1902 then for Port Jackson and Manly SS till he died. I guess there is a very very small possibility he was a "dealer" in between the two jobs but I really doubt it.

Were there any entries around the lower north shore area - Mosman, Kirribilli, Neutral Bay etc?

Hi Jette and thanks for the reply. I'll send an email to the Council and see what they have.

I guess I'd just like to see what the contract was for (1st one) and the detail of the 2nd.

There are a couple of odd things with the descendants of this family which might be clarified.

Thanks for offer re census but  have fairly complete census docs for them from 1841 - from Scotland's people.

Fife / Fife Family History Society - how to contact?
« on: Wednesday 05 May 10 22:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi all
I wondered if anyone here knew someone on the committee of the Fife Family History Society.
I am in Australia and was keen to join the society but not keen to send my cc details by email or post and they don't have an online secure payments. I sent an email explaining this and asking for a contact phone number or a fax number for someone so I could send through through my credit card details.  I explained that I was happy to attach the form to an email ( or post it) but wanted to advise CC separately.
I sent this to the membership secretary in Jan - no reply - a follow up sent in Feb. No Reply. About a fortnight ago I sent an email to each of the committee - one reply "We are having a committee meeting this week but I don't know if we can help you"
I really don't understand this.  ??? I know it is no doubt run by volunteers as most such groups are but the overwhelming lack of response just seems very odd. Does anyone have any suggestions?
