Thanks Gaffy for this information. We always knew mum was special, nice to have confirmation that she was in the upper group

Antrim / Elementary School Certificate Examination 1947
« on: Sunday 10 January 21 01:52 GMT (UK)  »
In going through some old papers I came across the Elementary School Certificate Examination paper for my mother. She took the exam in 1947 and apparently passed with honours in English, Geography, Drawing and Arithmetic. On the back of the paper it states that "This Examination was open to pupils of Public Elementary Schools, who were enrolled and had received instruction in the seventh or higher standard from a date not later than 1st January, 1947." Name of school is given as Argyle.

I am interested in learning more about what went into this type of exam (she was about 13/14 when the certificate was issued) and anything about the school and/or school system back then. As far as I know my mother left school and went to work after this.

I would discuss with mum but sadly she passed away in 2018.  I know she was born and mostly lived in Belfast but also spent time and lived with family members in Carrickfergus so I am really not sure where she finished her schooling.

Any information will be gratefully received and I will be happy with simply some direction as to where to look further as my google searches have not been very productive.

thank you in advance for any assistance

Pat

Too bad about the 1921 census - was looking forward to an opportunity to dig in.

Thanks for the info everyone - very weird that the NI 1927 census is missing but hopefully the 1926 census has some info although waiting that long seems like forever.

Family History Beginners Board / 1921 Census

I understand that the 1921 census will be released online in January 2022 so we have to wait for another year to access that information. Does anyone know if it includes Northern Ireland or due to the conflict did NI get dropped until the 1931 census? I know that there was a census in 1926 in Ireland that was briefly rumoured to be released early, however that will probably not be released until 2027. Did that census include any information on Northern Ireland?

Happy New Year and thank you in advance for any information

Family History Beginners Board / Full age versus minor
« on: Wednesday 09 December 20 21:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hello All,

I am sure that this question has been asked before, however I was having trouble when doing a search on the forums as I actually think that the question is too broad.  I found a record that I believe (hope) is my great-great grandparents' marriage. The marriage took place in 1873 in Belfast and the ages of the gentleman is given as "full" and that of the woman is given as "minor". Would minor be anyone under the age of 18 or is it a different age for marriage versus other considerations.

I always find Rootschatters extremely helpful so hope that the answer to this question is on the tip of someone's tongue

regards Pat

If you are searching the census with initials it is often helpful to put in the sex (male/female) and an approximate age as it will return people with those initials and age with 5 years on either side of what you have entered.

Workhouse/prison records are very frustrating to search but perseverance can pay off. Best of luck

Daisy,

thanks for all of this great information. I think I will look further into the military information you have provided. As far as the change in religion noted in the census data, I think that the notation of Presbyterian on the 1911 census is just whatever the person giving the information provided, not necessarily an answer that Mary would have given. Having said that there is an indication that the family attended the Church of Ireland by the time of my grandmother, at least for baptism and marriage, so another avenue to explore.

thanks very much

Pat
