Hi Libby,

I'm aware of the two children, Mary ann and Emme eliza. Mary ann is my great great grandmother, she went on to live to the 1940s and had many children with george green. When Emma dies, Emma Eliza goes to live with Mary Ann. It is sad they were born in the workhouse however at the time for many it was the only place to get very basic medical care, many were the forerunners of todays hospitals and are located more often than not on the sites of modern day hospitals, I suppose we have to be grateful of these small things. Im not certain they are sisters as they seem to be in different families however could be wrong? Do you have info on this would be great to find out.
Also who is the Thomas that you are talking about. Is he Emma's father?
Thanks very much for posting info

Hi jan,

Thanks for your reply thought it was a long shot to see if you still were linked into the website,
the Brooks family I have traced like you to tiverton devon, I am related to a family which I think may be cousins or aunts of the sarah brooks/fowell family. In the 1871 census where they are at Greenhill in Cheadle there is a domestic servant by the name of Emma Brooks also from Tiverton Devon this is my great times 4 grandmother. Originally i thought that the link between devon and cheadle must have been for work but having searched for them in Devon I think that they had family that lived in the Cheadle staffs area and also in Devon. On the 1851 census in Devon on Sarah b/f family there are a couple of visitors who say they are born in Staffordshire and later there in 1861 there is a link with a Charity Brooks who is Sarah's sister who is living with a Mary Jarvis who is living ion the district of Forsbrook in a area of that village called Blythe Marsh. I have done some research into this and it seems that this area was known for earthenware hawkers being near the potteries there were goods that were good value to buy and then sell for a profit, the Brooks family had a bit of a network set up I think buying these items and then going across the country back to Devon selling the wares. In Devon the families occupations on the census are hawkers so that explanation could work.

I think the 1861 census with sarah in Cheadle workhouse is likely to be her and her sister is also on the same page.
If you know anything of the link between Sarah and Emma then let me know.
If you could let me know any info on the Fowell family as well as when I saw she was out of the workhouse and married with children to John Fowell I thought it was wonderful my line are constantly in the workhouse! tough times.
Have you got a pic of greenhill house it was a lovely building. I can send you one if you like.
Thanks so much for replying
