Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Annie, Gordon or Clive Paling - Southampton
« on: Wednesday 16 February 05 14:05 GMT (UK)  »
A message was left by a Clive Allen on a genealogy board in 2001 regarding his grandmother and my great-grandmother, Annie Paling from Eastleigh, Southampton (she is the daughter of a Willoughby & Emily Paling - the family were originally from Leicester/Warwick area I think but moved to Southampton). Unfortunately, the email address Clive left is now out of order.
Annie Paling had a son Gordon Paling in Southampton in 1921 (Clive's Father).
My great-grandfather Norman Simes married Annie Paling in Southampton in 1923 and they had two children Patricia and John (my grandfather). I'd be interested to hear from Clive or anyone who knew the family to fill in some of the gaps but I've no idea how to trace him. Any ideas?

Sussex Lookup Requests / Simes in Herstmonceux Sussex
« on: Friday 11 February 05 12:48 GMT (UK)  »
I have had some success with tracing the Simes family in Sedlescombe. I was sent a transcript which suggests that my great (X5) grandfather John Simes was born in Herstmonceux to parents William and Anne Simes and was Christened in 1767.

William and Anne also had 6 other children from 1767 - 1776:
William
Elizabeth
Sarah
Mary
Jenny
and Henry

Please anyone with access please let me know if the parish records confirm this and if there are any other Simes family members in the area? Is there a record of William Simes' father for example? Would the parish records list address or occupation? If not, do you know where I might find these details?

Thank you in advance for any assistance you are able to provide.

Sussex Lookup Requests / 1841 Census Look Up Simes
« on: Tuesday 08 February 05 11:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Does anyone have access to the 1841 Census for the Sedlescombe/Whatlington area? I'm looking for John and Caroline Simes - possibly living at Hancox Farm in 1841.

I'm also looking for John's father also called John Simes and also a famer in the area I think. He was married to Hannah Simes and they had 8 children.

Bpt. 1799-6-13 John Simes - farmer at Hancox farm by 1841
His siblings:
Bpt. 1802-4-9 Edmond Simes
Bpt. 1803-8-7 Henry Simes
Bpt. 1805-4-27 Harriott Simes
Bpt. 1806-11-9 Sarah Simes
Bpt. 1807-12-31 Joshua Simes
Bpt.  1809-12-1 Eliza SIMES
Bpt. 1812-1-12 Hannah Simes

I'd be grateful for any help in finding John and Hannah and their children in 1841.

Regards

Catherine

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Simes in Gravesend and Horton Kirby C19th
« on: Monday 31 January 05 11:15 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace my great uncles Frederick Charles Simes and Arthur Simes who lived in Gravesend at the turn of the century and then moved to "The Grange" at Horton Kirby by 1928 and then unknown addresses until their deaths in 1940 and 1955 respectively. Does anyone know how I would go about tracing their movements in between? I know that they owned a seed business on New Road Gravesend during this time and that Frederick married a Sybil Rackstraw in c1914.

Thanks very much for this - it's certainly filled in a few gaps.
Caroline Simes had a lodging house on White Rock Road Hastings in 1867 so daughter Augusta must have carried it on.

Frederick W Simes is living in Darnely Road Gravesend in 1901 and by then is a seed merchant with a shop on New Road Gravesend.

Thanks for all your help. Where do you get all your info?

Hi Pauline

If you could have a look on the 1861 Census for Caroline Simes and her children that would be great. I think they may have been in either Sedlescombe (near Battle) or Hastings in 1861.

Caroline Simes born Caroline Crouch in Hastings c1815 age 46 in 1861
Augusta Simes born Sedlescombe in c1847 age 14
Caroline M Simes born       "           in c1849 age 12
Frederick W Simes born "               in 1850 age 11

In 1851 they were at Hancox Farm Whatlington.

Thanks for your help.
