« on: Thursday 30 December 10 18:05 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks to all.
Unfortunately no marriage record found but mother of all children is Rebecca Douthwaitte (Dorthwaite) born in Whitby,1791. There was a John Douglass born in Whitby 1789 but it is not him.
They moved around a lot ,until after 1825 when they appear to have settled in Darlington until their deaths in 1835 and 1838. John being listed as Surgeon on all childrens records.
1st child born in Hull, baptised York 1811.James Edwin
2nd baptised York in 1813 May ,then again in Gateshead Dec 25th that year. Eliza
3rd born in Hull per census about 1815. Rebecca
4th born Sheffield,per census 1818, John George
5th born Whitby 1820. William
6th born Whitby 1822. Thomas
7th born Sunderland 1824. John
8th born Darlington 1825. Jane

again many thanks

would there be any census returns for the barracks in 1841? and when you say his records did not survive, which record are you referring to?
 Thanks, Paul

Looking for suggestions on what documents may reveal the birthplace of my gr gr gr grandfather,John Douglass.Died in Darlington 1838 age 48. All childrens baptisms show him as a surgeon but wether he was qualified is questionable. How can I determine which one of the John Douglass's born that year he is? Any help appreciated...........................

I have an ancestor William Douglass who is listed on his marriage cert in 1846 as being a soldier living in Marylebone,London. Were there any Barracks in that area and any idea of what regiment he could have been in. He was born in Whitby in 1820. I cannot find him on the 1841 census, but by 1851 he was not in the military. Thanks,

I too have an ancestor who is listed as a surgeon on his childrens baptisms and marriages between 1811 and 1838. It appears he may have been a quack as he was selling medicines advertised in northern newspapers that seemed to cure every ailment known to mankind. I would love to find out if he was ever qualified. Do you know what resources may show this?.

Then you also have George Washington in your line. I recently did my ex wife's tree and found all those names too including George Washington. Its very interesting I know. Unfortunately for you, you are therefor somehow related to my ex wife but your secret lays safe with me. You should enjoy your Royal line but avoid her at all costs, she is the "Queen of Sheeba"..

I am an American, and have recently discovered that, on my mother's father's mother's side, (got that?), we're directly descended from British and French monarchs, and this information came as a complete surprise.  We've since discovered that we're related to the following:

    • Charlemagne
    • Egbert
    • Alfred the Great
    • Duke William I of Aquitaine
    • Edward the Confessor
    • William the Conqueror
    • Eleanor of Aquitaine
    • Henry II
    • King John
    • Henry III
    • Edward I
    • Emperor Ludwig of Bavaria
    • Philippe VI of France
    • Jean II Of France
    • Charles V of France
    • Charles VI of France
    • Henry VII
    • Henry VIII
    • QE2

... among others.  I believe we're direct descendents from all of them (i.e., they're all our umpteenth great-grandparents), except QE2 and the Henry's, who are cousins.  I imagine there are 10 million other folks on earth who can claim the same heritage, but still, I find all of this fairly mind-boggling!  :o

We've also discovered that on my dad's side we're related to St. Therese (the "Little Flower").

Rest assured, the bloodline has thinned out enough to where there is nothing saintly or royal about our current generation!  (I'm not expecting any invitations to Buckingham Palace or the Vatican anytime soon!)  ;)
