Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: Lancaster look up 1841 and 1851 Helme
« on: Thursday 20 April 06 01:49 BST (UK)  »
Sorry for the delay .
Emma's great grandfather was my 5xGreat grandfather James Broscomb born @ 1708.
There is a record (that I can't find again) of a James Broxham baptised somewhere on Oct 26 1712 who could be the one but there are records of lots of Broxoms etc in Batley & Birstall from 1640. Before that it appears they were Broxups from Blackburn(?) Lancashire.
Your Broscombes were quite a puzzle since many took the name Mcguire. Your 2 witnesses were i'm sure christened Earnest Leonard Broscomb Mcguire and Anna Beatrice Mcguire.
The Mcguires appear to have changed back to using Broscombe in the 1900s

Just got a 'nudge' from Ticker, the site moderator who pointed me toward your posting of long ago. This is what I found in the fiche
JEREMIAH WILKINSON  born 19th Dec 1779 Birstall
married 15th Sept 1803 Birstall to
                                      SARAH  FIRTH
Name was Jeremiah Riley Bapt 19 Jan 1780 son of Mr Benjamin Wilkinson of Heckmondwike, Merchant - Marriage Mr Jeremiah Wilkinson of Batley to Miss Sarah Firth of Heckmondwike in the Parish of Birstall both in the Diocese of York were married in this church by licence granted by Matthew Powley surrogate this 15th day of September in the year one thousand eight hundred & three by me W M Heald, Vicar. -- both signed - In the presence of Joseph Charlesworth & Joseph Wilkinson (both signed & both family or friends since a Joseph Shaw was often the second witness)
BENJAMIN WILKINSON   born 27th April 1760 Cleckheaton
married 16th Dec 1773 Birstall to
                                      THOMAZIN WADDINGTON
Benjamin son of Richard Wilkinson of Wike at Cleckheaton Chapel
Marriage Benjamin of Heckmonwike + Thomazin Waddington of Bradford --- married in this church by licence granted by R Ogden Surrogate --- by me R Ogden Surrogate -- both signed -- witnesses Richard Rayner & Sarah Wilson .. both names unique to this marriage = friends/family?
RICHARD WILKINSON     born ? possibly 1723 in Wibsey
married 16th July 1753 Birstall to
                                      MARY SUGDEN
Marriage -Richard of Wike

No earlier mention of Richard at the suggested date BUT Wilkinsons were there in the early 1700s. A Richard, son of Richard of Wike, babt 6th Oct 1734 -if this is him there's lots of earlier ones in Birstall

Just a few more bits I found----
I have the '61 census and note that Francis and Anne had children with the names Thomas & Margaret
--IGI shows the 26 March 1815 Christening of an Anne Tattersall at Gargrave -- parents Thomas & Margaret
and-- Gargrave contains Coniston and is near Skipton
Also found was a sister Susannah 23 May 1813
and --- 2 other Tattersall families had children at around the same time in Gargrave -- Lawrence & Jane + James & Ellen

That all looks quite promising!!!!! --- Couldn't find the parents on the unreadable 1841 census --nor in 1851

A Thomas Tattersall married Margret Aldersley on 17 Dec 1812 at Carlton In Craven.

Hi Rowdy
There's a marriage on http://freebmd.rootsweb.com for Francis Smith at Skipton in the Sept 1/4 of 1837
Anne Tattersall is the girl you're looking for  :)

I've just checked the '61 census.
The FRANCE family are no longer the Innkeepers at Colne Bridge & I can't find them anywhere close by. I did however notice a fancy Woolen weaver by the name of Henry Sykes age 49 with a wife Mary 49, an unmarried daughter Sarah Ann 21 a fancy Cotton weaver and son Duke age 17 a fancy woolen weaver. They were living at Shaw Cross, Kirkheaton.
Quite possibly yours??
Enjoy the hunt

I just checked Familyhistoryonline and found 6 Richards on the Kirklees census for 1841 and 4 on the 1851 census.
It's easy to subscribe to the site - it cost me about 80p to get the census schedule numbers and the household details would probably leave you some change from a well-invested £5.
I looked at the 41 census for Colne Bridge and found John 40,a publican with Mary 45, Benjamin 20, Sarah 20, John 1 & Mary age 60 plus others including Richard age 20 a Masons apprentice nearby.
The 51 census has John 53 & Mary 55 again with Benjamin & Sarah next door with John age 6 & George only a few months old.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Resources & Offers / Birstall & Batley in the 1700s
« on: Wednesday 26 January 05 00:49 GMT (UK)  »
I have access to most of the microfiche and some booklets for Birstal for the 1700s and also some transcripts for Batley for the same years.  I can also find details for a few years either side.
A few of the fiche are almost unreadable but if you have approximate dates I'll see what I can find.

For a lookup request please start a new topic in the census and resource lookup request board for this county

Always searching for Broscomb in all its forms and possibly even Broxup.  The family appears to have arrived in Birstall in the 1650s ....... but where from???
