Hello
I have a tree on Ancestry.co.uk, you may be able to email me in private on ancestry, then we can exchange emails without everyone picking up the address. My tree is called Hurrell Family Tree.

Surrey Lookup Requests / Re: Thomas Quittenton/Quittenden b.1819

Hello Maddie

I think there are definately 2 Thomas Quittenton's married to 2 Lucy's, they appear in the same census with different children.

I can find my Thomas Quittenton on the 1860 & 1870 census' only, they seemed to avoid census' and registration.

It may be that your ancestor John Quittenton was the reason my ancestor ended up marrying in Croyden, they may be related but I can't find out online.

The Quittenton's seem to be found around the Godstone area but move around a lot and avoid authority.

Have you tried the site www.theweald.org

Thanks

Barry

Surrey Lookup Requests / Thomas Quittenton/Quittenden b.1819
« on: Friday 23 July 10 12:25 BST (UK)  »
Hello I'm trying to trace a relative Thomas Quittenton b. 1819. Married Lucy Sutton in 1854 and father was a John Quittenton. 1861 census he's born in East Grinstead, Surrey/Sussex & 1871 born Godstone Surrey.

There is also another Thomas Quittenton who married a Lucy Colgate which confuses things.

Quittenton is a rare name but is spelt in lots of ways and it seems the Quittenton's avoided authority/registering BMD etc.

I live in Manchester and cannot get to the Record Office so any help would be great.

Thanks

Barry

I have been talking to the daughter of F S Simms and I understand that the birth certificate for Willie Smith was given to F S Simms by either his father, F G Simms/ Willie Smith or his mother Jane Simms/Page.

The daughter was not aware that her grandfather had changed his name but F S Simms was.

On the marriage certificate F G Simms is a widower, so there may be siblings of F S Simms. He is an only child and was not aware of any relatives at all.

I have Wille's birth certifcate, b. 22.7.1882 at 197 Darnall Hill, Attercliffe to James and Harriet Smith. the name is Willie not William.

The 1881 census shows

James Smith 42
Harriet Smith 41
George W. Smith 20
Emily Smith 17
Arthur Smith 16
Albert Smith 13
Frank Smith 9
Fred Smith 6
Lilly Smith 1

all Living at 197 Darnall Road, Attercliffe cum Darnall.

1891 Census

James Smith 52
Harriett Smith 50
Frank Smith 19
Fred Smith 17
Lillie Smith 11
Ernest Smith 6
Emily Smith 27

Living at 222 Darnall Road, Attercliffe cum Darnall

I think James Smith was born 1839 to John and Ann Smith in Sheffield, not sure when he died there are so many Smith's.

James Smith married Harriet Wilson in 1859 in Sheffield. Harriet was born abt 1840 in Darnall to George and Hannah Wilson. Not sure when Harriet died.

Hello I need help.

I have started a family tree for  a friend and have quickly come across an interesting problem that i cannot resolve.

Frederick Gilbert Simms married Jane Page 14.10.1939, Frederick was a widower. they had 1 child, Frederick Stephen Simms b. 16.4.1940.

According to Frederick Stephen Simms, Frederick Gilbert Simms was not born with that name but was born Willie Smith 22.7.1882, I have the birth certificate. The parents are James & Harriet Smith.

Apart from Frederick Gilbert Simms birth (as Willie Smith), his marriage to Jane Page and his death as Frederick Gilbert Simms in 1951. I cannot find any information regarding this man. He is listed as a Cutler on the marriage certificate and a carpenter 10 years later on the death certificate.

I have found parents and siblings on census' living in Atercliffe cum Darnall but no sign of Willie/Frederick.

Does anyone have any info? why would he change his name?

Sorry I obviously have not provided enough information nor clarified what i'm trying to request this is the first time i have been on the site. my family tree is on ancestry.co.uk.

James Megicks/Majicks/Magicks was born abt 1774 and died in 1832 in Oxford. I have his marriage record and the birth records of his 4 daughters and 1 son, all in oxford. I have his will and probate, and the 1830 poll of the freeholders for the knights of the shire. I also have a lease for property in Oxford.

the oxford family history society cannot find any birth records in oxfordshire and it apears he either changed his name or he came from somewhere else. i am after any ideas about tracing this mans birth or where he came from, directories, registers etc.

i can't get to the record office

There are a lot of Megicks in Wales, my grandfather, g. grandfather and g.g. grandfather were born in wales. i have traced all the megicks in wales from 1901 backwards and they are all descended from James megicks born in oxford, his son also called James moved to Lampeter when the University was established.
