Renfrewshire / Alexander Stevenson, Abbey
« on: Monday 15 March 10 10:45 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find more information about the Stevenson family in Abbey, Paisley.

Alexander Stevenson c1785 married Martha Taylor c1789 in 1810 and had the following children:

James 1811
John 1813 (married Elizabeth Harris in 1838), Canal Boatman
Alexander 1815
Grace 1817
Robert 1821
Eastman 1823
Martha 1826
Annabella 1830

Alexander was a quarry labourer.  One of his sons married a Janet, who signed John's death register. Both John's and Janet's families lived in Back Sneddon - I don't know if that was also Alexander and Martha's residence.

I'm also looking for graves in the area. I went to the Bellshill Family History Centre last weekend, but they're only open Monday-Friday.

I'm looking for Bridget Barret = John Stevenson
b. c1835 Ireland
d. 8 Apr 1899 Dalziel

also Peter Bogan
b. c1849 Ireland
d. 1902 Carluke

Lanarkshire / Blantyre Devlins
« on: Monday 25 January 10 17:01 GMT (UK)  »
John Bell Devlin (1876 Camlachie) married Mary Ann McKeown (1878, Blantyre) in 1897 and had the following children:

Elizabeth 1897 = married Archibald Richardson Mitchell in 1919
Annie 1899 = married name McDonaugh
James George 1901 = married Margaret Smalls in 1935
John Stevenson (I think) 1905
Mary c1909
Michael c1913

I think there were probalby other children whom I haven't been able to pinpoint yet. Short of a trip into Edinburgh or spending a small fortune on ScotlandsPeople - are there any Devlin descendants out there? The 1901 Census only has Elizabeth and Annie so I'm stuck until the 1911 becomes available.

Elizabeth took a trip to Canada with two of her brothers (George & John?) where she worked for Lord Beaverbrook as a housemaid. That's about all I have to go on so far.

I'm still trying to trace this family.

George died in 1857 in Dalziel, Lanarkshire. His son Andrew Allan Mitchell doesn't seem to have a birth record. He should have been born in 1854 according to his marriage & death records, but there is no corresponding birth for him. Did people fall through the cracks when the registries were centralized in 1855? I can't seem to find him at all. It doesn't help that I'm not sure whether his mother was Elizabeth Allan or not. I'd presumed so because he was known as Andrew Allan (as on his death record), but his marriage has no middle name.

Sorry for the ramble.

I'm now trying to find Andrew, mother Elizabeth (1827) and sister Janet (1856) on the 1861 Census and having no luck there either. They should by this time be in Lanarkshire, probably Dalziel or Motherwell.

Lanarkshire / Bridget Cleary - 1921, Blantyre
« on: Wednesday 13 January 10 16:00 GMT (UK)  »
My grandfather emmigrated to Canada with his family in 1929. During his military service in WW2 he visited his family (Mitchells) in Blantyre, as well a girl he knew as a child, Bridget Cleary.

I think Bridget was born around 1921. I am hoping that she is still living and would love to be able to contact her.

Carawa,

I think your John Mitchell is the brother of my 4xgreat grandfather, George Mitchell. George was staying with John & Mary Ann in Kilbirnie in 1851.

I'm trying to identify their parents and siblings. There are so many Mitchells in Sorn at that time. I wonder if you have any further information that might point me in the right direction?

Regards,
Sarah

Thanks to both of you. This certainly gives me something to go on.

I was really stuck trying to place the marriage especially - you've saved me a lot of searching. I hope. :)

Ayrshire / George Mitchell, Sorn
« on: Friday 08 January 10 16:21 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to make sense of the Mitchells in Ayrshire.

My Andrew Allan Mitchell (1855) was born in Motherwell, Lanarkshire, but his father George (1825) was from Sorn, Ayrshire.

George's parents were:
George Mitchell and Jane/Jean Templeton, married in Sorn in 1822
I can't yet trace either of them.

George Mitchell (1825) was a widower with 2 surviving children, 2 deceased, when he married Elizabeth Allan in 1855 in Motherwell. George then died in 1857.

Is anyone else looking into Mitchells who could possible shed some light on this?

I've been trying census records but haven't made any headway - just found more Mitchells. Help!

Thanks!

I had the census info for the Stevensons - that is the correct family. It was really sad - the father died in a mining accident (age 36) and less than two years later the daughter has an illigitimate child. I'm trying to find more of their story.

I'll have to look into Patrick McAnn though. That sounds likely.

Thank you so much!
