London and Middlesex / Re: Death of a policeman in Islington 1866
« on: Friday 11 June 10 13:05 BST (UK)  »
That incident shows up in The Times, Friday, Mar 27, 1857; pg. 9; Issue 22639; col F - referring to the preceding Wednesday.

There's a policeman of the same name who shows up in The Times, Monday, Jan 30, 1933; pg. 12; Issue 46355; col E, having had an illustrious career in the police and the army.  Could be part of the same family?

Does your friend have access to these newspaper archives by use of a library card?  Hertfordshire Library Service does allow access to them that way.

Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Lutterworth: Marriage 3 July 1804
« on: Saturday 16 January 10 20:55 GMT (UK)  »
According to the IGI, batch M061021, this is a marriage between Thomas BENNETT and Susannah ROBINSON, but the bishops transcripts, as transcribed on Rootsweb, show Thomas MOUNT and Susannah ROBINSON.

I'd really like it to be Thomas BENNETT, so that then it would mean (probably) that the Thomas and Susannah BENNETT who were witnesses at the 1826 marriage of George BENNETT (b ca 1804, Lutterworth) and Martha WESTON would have been George's parents.

Is there any chance that there's anyone going to the records office who can have a look and find out just what Thomas's surname is?  I'm presuming that there's  a problem in reading the writing.  The surname MOUNT seems to be concentrated in another area, so I still have hopes at the moment.  There's no point in my cherishing false hopes if the surname really is MOUNT.  I guess it would help if I could find George's baptism, but I haven't found that yet, either.

thanks

I'm being dense here (not unusual) but did Martha marry out of her birth parish of Leicester St Margaret?  The marriage has her "of the parish St Mary Nottingham"  Does that mean that the family moved/lived in Leicester AND Nottingham??

Not as dense as I feel about it!  I go back every so often to re-read the record, because it doesn't make sense to me, either.  But I really am looking at an image of the parish register (for St Nicholas, Leicester), and it does say that Martha was o.t.P. of St Mary, Nottingham.  But it also fits other records of her for her to have been baptised in Leicester (St Margaret's).

It does reinforce the idea that there is a connection between Martha and the Nottingham clan.

Most of my Westons stayed in the Nottingham area, but one moved via an iron foundry in Belper then to Wigston.

That really looks interesting to me.

There seem to be links in my tree between Arnesby, Wigston, Leicester, and Nottingham, in connection with this family... which ties in with what you are saying.

I'm also interested that there's a ROBINSON connection in the Nottingham tree on that site.  The trouble is that that isn't a terribly rare surname, so anything there could be coincidence, but I do have a possible IGI Lutterworth marriage (which conflicts with the Bishop's Transcripts) which would tie in neatly as possible parents for Martha's husband, George BENNETT: Thomas BENNETT (or MOUNT, if you go by the transcripts - which spoil my theory completely) married Susannah ROBINSON in Lutterworth in July 1804.

It would be good to be able to tie up that link with the mayor, though!

hi there. it's probably a different family then because their name was definitely wesson. happy hunting.
best wishes lyn

I recall reading - and I think there's support from the censuses - that WESTON and WESSON were fairly interchangeable.  They may well be different families, but if you rely on the different spellings as evidence of that then you may miss out.

I have a family where GARDNER/GARDENER/GARDINER/GARNER/GARNAR were all the same name.  In my husband's tree there's an even more bizarre one: WAD(D)LING/WED(D)LING/WAD(D)LETON/WED(D)LETON!  And there are others.

The geography suggests there is a link but the names I have are not in the list on the site to which you have given a link...

John WESTON m Rhoda BINDLEY (or BINGLEY) 29 Sep 1778 Wigston Magna, Leicester, [IGI-submn7813235]

I have put the names I have deduced to be my direct ancestors into bold.

Rhoda appears to be the sister of the erstwhile mayor of Leicester (based on 1851 census), by which route I have deduced the parents.

There are a couple of Wigston Magna IGI baptisms (Matthew 17 Apr 1783, and Mark 10 Mar 1785) which might fit into the family, but about which I'm rather doubtful.

This link is to a commercial site, but it does have a specific page all about the history of the Co-Op in Plymouth:
http://www.chrisrobinson.co.uk/system/index.html
Choose: Local History from the left-hand menu bar, and then click on the picture on the right - it's labelled:

I think they update about once a month - or every 4/5 weeks or something.

I'm pleased to have alerted you to something useful.

Buckinghamshire / Re: BATES Family
« on: Friday 08 January 10 14:59 GMT (UK)  »
I have BATESes in Bucks, but much further north.

I have a Newman BATES (who doesn't seem to have a connection to the crowd of them in Drayton Parslow) who was part of the family in Wingrave.

I suspect he may have spent a chunk of time in London - but that might be another one!

He and his family ended up in Northall, with hatch/match/dispatch events in nearby Edlesborough.
