Clackmannanshire / The Sorley name
« on: Monday 16 August 10 22:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks,

Can anyone tell me how the Sorley name seems to be so concentrated
in the counties of Clackmannanshire and Perthshire.
I believe the name is connected to Clan Cameron and Clan Mcdonald,
both as you know originate to the north and west of the two afore
mentioned counties.

Thanks,

Ruari.

Good point Ruth, never thought about the dodgy spelling.
I only checked the two usual spellings, I will go and try a few
other likely sounding Sorley variations
Thanks,
Ruari

Thanks to Kirsty and Aislynn for your replies,
Patrick Sorlie is definitely one of mine but still not sure
about Thomas. I think that all the Sorlies from Perthshire
are related in some way, and I now have an expert helping
me with the search.
Thanks again,

Ruari.

Derry (Londonderry) / Mcginnes/ Hannegan Chelsea Pensioner
« on: Sunday 10 January 10 16:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi folks,
Can anyone help with any info on my relatives.
My great great great grandparents were James Mcginnes who married Bethia Hannigen, James was born in Derry approx 1783
and Bethia was born in Donegal approx 1784.
We dont know where they were married but James was a soldier
as it said on his death cert he was a Chelsea Pensioner.
They both died in Dundee Scotland near their daughter Mary ann,
who married Robert Heron.
Bethias parents were Oliver Hannegan a Butcher, and Mary Gray
from Donegal.
Thanks.

I am looking for any info about my Irish family, my great great grandmother was born Mary Ann Mcginnes, and her mother was Bethia Hannegan whos father was Oliver hannegan a Butcher in Donegal.
Bethias mothers maiden name was Mary Gray.
Bethia married James Mcginnes from Derry who was a soldier-later to become a Chelsea Pensioner.
Mary Ann married my great great grandfather Robert Heron in Dundee Scotland in 1849 she died here in 1895 aged 71 meaning she was born propably Donegal approx 1824.

Happy new year to all Celtic cousins from Scotland.

Perthshire / Re: Sorley Sorlie how they were in Perthshire

Thanks to eilthireach for your response but I already knew
why names sometimes change.  The main query was which clan
the Sorleys of Fowlis Wester came from and when did they arrive
in the Crieff area.
I have checked the Rannoch website mentioning the Macsorleys
but it does not help connect our family for sure as we are also
associated with clan Donald and Lamont.

Perthshire / Sorley Sorlie how they were in Perthshire
« on: Sunday 03 January 10 23:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi folks.
Can anyone help me with this query,as it is driving me nuts.
I have traced my family back to Wester fowlis near Crieff, where
they were for many generations.
My great great great grandfather was John sorlie, married to
Mary Barclay in 1804 in Fowlis Wester, now I think his parents were
Patrick Sorlie and Ann Dow married in same place in 1783 but I am
not certain. Some where down the line the spelling changed to Sorley.
What I need to know is when did all the Sorlie / Sorleys come to
Perthshire and from where,as the name is connected to Camerons
of Glen Nevis and also the clan Lamont and clan Donald.
Hope someone can help.
