Kevin I would be very interested to know who this guy is.
I don't think there is any doubt that we are German. My nephew has come up with a German name and has followed it back but unless he can prove that this man came here and we can positively identify him, then I am not adding him to my tree.
Remind me of your email address and I will try and send you the info from my nephew.

Regards
 Carol

Hi Kevin. Hope you are well. We have health problems at the moment so are not doing a lot.
My nephew has done some searching and has come up with information which he believes is the real thing BUT I am waiting to hear from him as to whether or not he has any documentation to prove what he has. I am not very hopeful! No one in the family has managed to get any further and I think it's getting a bit late for some of us. It's hopefully something that you younger members will solve.

John and Sophia married at Claines Parish church so will have been banns. Claines does come under Worcester according to the marriage cert..
The address for both of them looks like Chessnut Street. ?
The occupation for Johns father was Shoemaker so I dont think that he would have been connected to the Civil Service.
I will check the Cencus as you have done. They could well have been friends with William and Sarah.

I do appreciate your help...you obviously have more knowledge than I do. Can the Cencus records be checked by street name?

That is very interesting. Did they marry in Claines Worcester.
I would be grateful for your help. If you wouldn`t mind checking for me, that would be great.
I feel better about this already.... you have come up with new ideas. Things that I had not thought of.
Thank you,

Kark :)

:)  Thank you for checking this for me. I do have these records but had no idea about the consular records....are they available on line, do you know.
The witnesses on the marriage certificate are as far as I know, not family names. They are William Moseley and Sarah Minchinton ?
The 1911 Cencus says that he was from Germany and doesn`t mention being a BS.

Europe / John Starkey
« on: Thursday 23 September 10 20:28 BST (UK)  »
Please can anyone help me. My Gr. grandfather was John Starkey, born 1854 in Hanover Germany. His father was also called John and both were shoe/bootmakers.
I do not know when John Jnr came to the UK and also rumour in the family is that the surname was changed but I do not know what the German name was. I am at a complete standstill.
I cannot find him on the 1871 Cencus but he was married in Claines Worcestershire in 1877 to Sophia Brown.

If anyone can help me I would appreciate it.

Pauley, you are probably right. Someone needs to go to Germany.

Your g-g-g-grandmother may have been a british subject but I think that John Starkey never became a british citizen.
The researcher at Kew Archives said that people could put what they wanted on a cencus because no-one would ever check and that it was very rare for anyone to actually change their nationality.
Sadly I fee that there are some members of our family who could tell us about

John but they will take the secret to the grave, I feel.

Hello,
Please can anyone help me. My Gr.Grandfather was born in Preussen in 1854. His name was John Starkey as was his father (according to his marriage certificate ) Both were shoe/bootmakers. I do not know when my gr grandfather came to the UK or where he came to. He married in 1877 in Claines, Worcestershire to Sophia Brown. I would like confirmation of his birth and then hopefully, get some information on his family/siblings.
What do I do to find anything, I am at a standstill with him.
