I am also descended from Samuel Player from Cupar who died in 1848 and owned the Blue Bell inn. I have recently been working on the Player family tree from Samuel through to my grandmother Mary Player born in Leuchars in 1910.
Thank you for posting the information about Samuel and the Fife Fencibles. Have you manged to find anything else about him since your last postings. I live in Fife and am happy to help with any research that you are doing and will pass on any info that I find.
