All of her siblings where born in Minsterley, Shropshire. But I can't find her records...worth mentioning that all their surnames are recorded as "woans".

And they moved to the Sedgley area. Thanks

England / Anybody help track a death pls?
« on: Wednesday 12 December 12 21:13 GMT (UK)  »
I've spent many an hour looking for the birth of my GGGG grandfather, and now feel like having another go at his wife. Only this time, it's her death, not birth that has eluded all those who seek her.

Her name is Elizabeth Wones, nee Cumpston (1769)
She married Edward Wones in 1784, Shelve, Shrops. Her last child was born in 1808. And the family moved to the black country some time after.

Help appreciated
Niki

Is there a better source for the 1801/11/21/31 census than Ancestry?

This chap was born  c1760, and we have a few ideas of counties to look for his birth. But basically he is a needle in a haystack!  He has had several researchers look for him (inc a professional). We are all stumped.

Good point. Answer to that is, i'm not really sure. I think he himself wasn't what could have been called "well off", but his son, or grandchildren appear to have had some money. Just depends how much.

Thanks

Does anybody know when newspaper obituaries began, or even when they became more commonplace?

Wondering if I might have some luck finding anything out about a man in my tree who died 1820.

thanks

Hi agaain

The Index says ;

Edward Wones aged 60 buried at All Saints, Sedgely on 24 April 1820

Not much but it seems to tie in with your search I hope?

Nigel

Yeah, that's him. Thanks again!

Did a bit of scratching around, if you're looking for Edward Wones final resting place I'd say he would have to be in the Hereford Diocese area, will need some leg work by the looks, phone calls, personal visits for records etc, there's about 29 churches, Church of All Saints at Shelve might be a good start, though according to blurb it was built in 1839 over a Medieval structure, whatever that was, there's another at Stretton not far away, ran out of time on looking at it's history, if you can establish which church they were married at I'd think that's where he's buried

James

Morning,
He moved to Sedgley after being married, and the birth of the children.
Based on where he died (Hurst Hill, Sedgley) I emailed the church and had a helpful reply of a lady.

"I should say that registers of that date are irritatingly vague about where individuals lived, and don't record exactly where they were buried. We have three historic burial grounds; Dudley archives also has a copy of transcripts of memorials that survived until about 1980. In 1820, Edward could be in the churchyard, but is most likely to be in Vicar Street cemetery, now maintained as a memorial garden by Dudley MBC. Few memorials there were retained, although listings were made and indexed of names and dates in the MIs. Unless there is or was a memorial, it's impossible to tell exactly where someone was buried, even whether they're in the churchyard or Vicar Street. I don't hold out a great deal of hope that the family could afford a headstone. At Dudley, you should also check what's known as the 'Liber Parochialis' for his widow and family in c.1832 - it's transcribed and indexed. I think it's more precise about dwelling places."

Hi Niki

Just as a bit of collateral info:

National Burial Indx V 2 -
No entries 1538 - 1760
4 entries 1761 - 1825 3 at St Bartholomew, Madden and 1 at All Saints Sedgley, Nr Wolverhampton
No entries 1826 -1860
1 entry 1861 -2003 at Bourne, Lincs

Let me know if you want details of these?
Of course not all cemetries have been 'done' either.

There is a later edition out now but this little bit of info may help?

NDRFT

I'd love to have the details on the Sedgley one please!

Thanks

Hi, I think Mary Wones could be one of 'my' lot :) Haven't proved it yet though!

I was born a Wones. I would love to find out whether she is a sister (?) of my GGGG grandfather Edward, born around 1760.

Hope your research is going well, would love to hear if you have any info on any Woneses!

England / Simon WONES - Yorkshire
« on: Tuesday 11 December 12 21:38 GMT (UK)  »
As a sidestep to my other post on a different board, I would love to know if anyone can find a birth place for Simon Wones. He could be connected to my tree, possibly via the holy grail of 'my' Woneses; "Edward". (See here for back ground info http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=626436.new;topicseen#new )

I'll copy and paste a snippet from an email I have from another fellow Wones researcher re Simon Wones...

"The other great conundrum which no one has yet been able to find is the actual parish/place of Simon Wones birth in Yorkshire, although the LDS record seems quite determined that he was born in the county in 1769 – the trouble is they don’t mention just where."

He immigrated from Yorkshire to Ohio with his family, he is believed to have been a school teacher/town clerk.

I'm not too interested in anything other than birthplace, at least, not until we've got the birthplace.

Thanks
