Are you still interested in info about the various Digory Pendray Roberts'?  If so, I think I could help you out

Thanks you so much Tony - all the info is greatly appreciated even if it does raise more questions than it answers!!

I have found a family with mother and father Henry and Rachel Gatehouse in the 1841 Census but they were in Shaftsbury with no mention of "my" Charles (but then he would be old enough not to be living with them) - but if this is them, why was Charles baptised in Deal?

They are still in Shaftsbury in 1851 - Rachel born in Wiltshire, with Henry and son James born Shaftsbury.  Henry is a Cordwainer, so nothing that would take them to Deal.  So probably not the right family - although it might be interesting to see if I can find a marriage for them outside Kent.

Kind regards,

Sally

Thank you again - it may well tie in somewhere along the way.

Thanks Betty.

Does the parish refer to where they were living when they got relief or where they had come from?

I thought East Malling was quite some way from Walmer, or is there another one?

Thanks, Sally

Hello Tony and thanks for the info.
Do you have access to local baptisms and marraiges? I wonder if there is a record of the marriage of Henry and Rachel, or any other children?  Thank you.

Hello Victor,

Sorry, but I don't understand pm!  I'm probably missing something very simple!

Kent / Gatehouse family from Walmer & Dover, Kent
« on: Sunday 15 July 12 14:35 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone,
I am keen to find out more about my Kent ancestors, in particular (at the moment) those with the surname my Gatehouse.

I believe that my gt, gt grandfather, Charles, was baptised in Deal in 1821 and wondered whether anyone has a record of his parents and/or any siblings.  Looking on IGI, the baptism of Charles was the only one of the family I could find in Deal - father Henry, with no mention of mother.

My Gatehouse family was in the Dover area in all the various Census reports and, in some, it states that Charles (sometimes known as Richard) was born in Walmer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've just read this thread as I wonder whether my Browning ancestors from Kent were travellers. He was a Higgler, which I think is an itinerate hawker.
