The Common Room / Re: Name Unknown

Hi there
the Opawa made several voyages.  the one I am interested in is :
depart Plymouth 27 Sep 1877 - arrive Lyttelton NZ 03 Jan 1878 (voyage took 98 days) Captain McInnes

I think the one you mention is :
depart Plymouth 07 Sep 1878 - arrive Lyttelton 07 Dec 1878 (voyage took 91 days) Captain Triston

I was going to contact the Archives at Kew, but as I don't have a name (apart from the fact that it will be a foreign name) I can't do this.  What I need is someone who has access to the records to search the crew list for that voyage and let me know of any "foreign sounding" names or, better still, somehow get me a copy of the passenger and crew lists for that voyage.

Cheers
Dorothy

I need help!  I am trying to trace my great great grandfather who was a seaman/cook and was born in Madras, India.  Unfortunately, he changed his name before marrying my great great grandmother, so I do not have a name to research!!  I am hoping someone is able to access passenger and crew records for the Opawa which left Plymouth, England on 26 September 1877, arriving in the port of Canterbury (now Lyttelton) on 3 January 1878.  They apparently met on-board.  I am searching for any Indian sounding name among the crew.
If anyone could help that would be fantastic.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Elliott *COMPLETED*

I am searching for relatives of David Roy Elliott.  He was born in New Zealand 24.08.1904 and died in 1974.  He had a fruit and vege shop in Hastings and also in Marewa.  His children were David (son) and Dallas (daughter).  He married twice, but I think the children were from his first marriage.

I am trying to trace my husband's great grandfather who was in the 5th Northumberland Fusiliers Colchester Barracks in Essex in 1886. HIs name was Thomas Haycock (born: 1868 Rugeley, Staffordshire). I have tried Ancestry.com, have looked at various websites, but all to no avail.  I am getting very frustrated.  Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Hi Angelbaby

I would like to send you a personal message as I am really no good at this chatter thing!!  I can't work out how to do it.  I would prefer to be in contact via e-mail as I know how to use that.

Any ideas?

Warwickshire / Grantham - Timmo
« on: Thursday 31 December 09 06:14 GMT (UK)  »
I am new to this site and am not very proficient.  I have been researching my family history and came across a conversation with Angelfire (I think) and JJ (I think) regarding Mary Ann Grantham.

My great great grandmother was Mary Ann Grantham (her parents were Elizabeth Powell and Thomas Grantham.  Mary Ann married Samuel Frederick Timmo (sometimes recorded as Timms - just to make things difficult!).  They had 10 children.  They lived in New Zealand.  Samuel Frederick was born in Madras (now Chennai) on the Bay of Bengal in India.  I have been led to believe that he changed his name to Timmo before marrying Mary Ann.  My great grandmother, Mary Ann (Polly) was one of their daughters.

I have some further information and a photograph of Mary Ann, Samuel and their children, if you are interested.
Cheers
