I did wonder that, but as I mentioned, I haven't found a suitable match anywhere.

On FindMyPast's list of Enumeration Districts Manchester is NJA & Sheffield KIA. MAN & SHE don't appear.

I've noticed the use of MAN on many entries which makes me wonder if the lettering system changed in later years. Maybe someone is a bit more knowledgeable on the subject.

As I said, I suspect they may have married in Ireland/Northern Ireland  or never married.

Not to worry. Regards Eric

Thanks, but sadly it doesn't seem to apply in this case.

I'm beginning to suspect that she married outside England & Wales. I haven't found anything obvious in Scotland which makes me wonder if they married in Ireland or they never actually married.

Thanks Boo. That is a reference to her burial. One from her husband and one from her sister Alice Chapman, nee Ratcliffe, also mentioning her late husband Arthur.

Now I know the husband's name. something to work on.

Rosie---I've already checked that list as I thought SHE may refer to a place but interestingly there are none beginning S on the list I found. Is m/c a reference to Marr. Cert?

Although, a few entries down on the 1939 there is a woman with a name change with the the letters SLF shown who appears to have married in West Cheshire. So...probably on the wrong track.

Not to worry.

Thank you all.

Yes, it is Elizabeth Ratcliffe b Salford and the grave mentioned is hers.

I noticed the Warrington marriage and wondered if she may be the Doris b 1933 in Warrington. Plus, I can't see why she would use the name Doris.

I know the date entered is the date the register was amended, but I was more interested the other annotations next to the date.

I have an entry in the 1939 Register, which shows that the name changed at some point. I assumed it was by marriage, however, I can't find a suitable marriage.

Is anyone able to decipher the annotations on the left of the entry?

Postal districts and registration and other whatever districts are completely different.

Thanks. I know where the various districts start and finish, but what I was getting at is where people say they actually live. Some areas close to a border are referred to as different places by different people....and it still happens today. Old Trafford /Stretford, Walkden/Little Hulton, Crumpsall/Cheetham Hill to name but a few, but does it really matter?

Never thought of the Etihad as being in Newton/Newton Heath, but as I was just saying; different people refer to places by different names.

Regards

On A-Z's, " A street name, followed by the name of another street in italics, does not appear on the map, but will be found adjoining or near the latter".

Sealey street is in what was known, and still is, known as Monsall, although, in the past it was often referred to as Collyhurst. I think it was sometimes referred to as Miles Platting with being near the end of Queens Road. I had ancestors who lived in that area and at the end of Collyhurst Road, just before the railway, and they both mentioned Miles Platting on occasions.
