Cornwall Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Monumental Inscription, Port Isaac.
« on: Thursday 04 August 11 18:17 BST (UK)  »
Dear danuslave,

Many thanks for all your efforts, they are very much appreciated. I dare say that the elderly gentleman who came across the grave has long since forgotten all about it as it was quite some time when he saw it. He didn't recall the servicemans name on the headstone, and he couldn't recall which graveyard/churchyard he visited - as I stated in my original post "It's a long shot" regarding finding an answer or any information on the subject.

I think we can say that this thread is now completed as the elderly gentleman was rather vague to begin with and so I feel that he will not be able to assist further.
Many thanks for the trouble you took to go and look, your help and the information you have provided, is very very much appreciated, it was most kind of you.

Hello Morgan,

Yes, please feel free to delete the thread.  ;)   To be honest, I'd forgotten all about it, but I  discovered a long time ago that the Thomas Henry Corbett of Haverford isn't connected to my family line.

Many thanks,  ;D
Lin.

Good heavens  :o I posted the original request for info regarding Thomas Henry Corbett way back in 2005!

A lot of water has passed under the bridge since then.  ;D

Cornwall Completed Lookup Requests / Monumental Inscription, Port Isaac.

Hi All,

I know this is a long shot, but here goes ...

I am writing in the hope that someone might be able to help an elderly gentleman who recently visited Port Isaac. Whilst there, he took a stroll around an old Methodist Church/Churchyard where he came upon a grave inscription relating to a Royal Naval Serviceman who had been killed in 1914 off the Coast of South Africa. Sadly the elderly gentleman can not recall the servicemans name. He does recall however, that the inscription included the letters LCC, and he being ex Royal Navy himself was puzzled by this. He wondered what it meant?

I do believe that HMS Pegasus was sunk off Zanzibar in 1914 and that there were casualties (37 if memory serves me right). The Casualties are buried in Dar Es Salaam war Cemetery & Zanzibar (Grave Island) Cemetery.

I know this is a long shot, since we do not know the Royal Naval Servicemans name, but I was hopeful that perhaps the inscription on the grave in the old Methodist Churchyard had been transcribed.

Any help appreciated.

Antrim / Re: Belfast birth 1771

Hi Chappers,

My family research suggests that my Corbett family line had relocated from Ireland (Belfast) to England c.1815. I have no lead regarding any other family members remaining in Ireland. I had a researcher search the Belfast Parish records for me, but nothing was found.
A possible link in Blaris, near Belfast was uncovered, but the lack of the baptism record for my James Corbett born 1810 left this line of research high and dry - I can't prove a connection to the Corbett family found in Blaris.
The parish records of Blaris were searched and a baptism of a Thomas Henry Corbett was recorded in 1811, mother, Eleanor Corbett.

My Eleanor Corbett did have a son named Thomas Henry Corbett, only he was born in Ireland in 1815.

I am sorry I am unable to help you, but I wish you well with your own search.

Linda.

Hey Annie!  - hope you are keeping well.

I am still busy documenting the brave men and boys who served in the 9th Battalion, Manchester Regiment during the Great War.

I have just returned from a trip to France & Flanders where I visited and photographed many of the 9th battalion graves. Since I have been working on this project for about four years, the names and in some cases even the faces of the men and boys who served in the 9th Battalion are very familiar to me. It was a very moving experience to be stood by their gravesides. Gorre British & Indian Cemetery was especially moving, as many in there were comrades in the 2/9th Battalion and they are buried side by side. Such a sad sight.

Lest we forget.

Lin.

Hi,
I thought I had best post the new link to my Ashtonpals website as I changed my website provider some time ago.

There are many new additions to my website, including new war grave photos, surname & dates for enlistments, discharges and entry into the theatre of war. Silver War Badge list, obituaries and newspaper articles.

THE ASHTON TERRITORIALS, 9th BATTALION OF THE MANCHESTER REGIMENT.

If you're feeling miffed about the loss of the website, please try to imagine how I am feeing having spent many, many hours working on it  :'(

I am very sorry to hear the sad news about Peter. He was a gentleman, who went out of his way to help others with their research. He will be sadly missed on rootschat. My deepest sympathy, thoughts and prayers are with his family at this sad time.
