Hi

Haven't been on here for a while, so only just seen your post.  My apologies.

Firstly - Salem Cottages - this is the reply I got from the Local Studies Centre at Bushey Museum -

"Thanks to the extra information in your two emails, I’ve found Salem Cottages! They were on Sparrows Herne rather than Clay Hill – on the south side, about halfway between the war memorial
on the corner of School Lane and the old police station.   There were eight cottages, presumably a terrace, and like the Black Cottages the other side of the police station, I would imagine they were pretty basic.   They were  demolished in about 1960 and replaced by a modern block of flats.   Incidentally, the 1926 Kelly’s Directory lists the householder as Ernest James Wells – presumably Sarah’s illegitimate son."

My profile photo - This is of Robert Charles Wells, Sarah's son, who married Jemima Jane Quarry. Jemima was the daughter of James Quarry and Annie (nee Stone). Annie's father was James Stone, who after the death of his first wife, married Sarah Wells.  My gran was the daughter on the far right of the photo.

Sarah is a fascinating person. I did an article about her for the Herts Family History Society journal. As for her mother - never traced a marriage - and even the people at Hertfordshire Archives drew a blank.

I can forward a copy of the journal about Sarah to you

Hi

Thanks again - I am already following up on these leads - everyone is so helpful. Even after 30plus years researching, there is always a time to ask for help.

Diolch yn fawr (Thanks very much - in Welsh)

Many thanks for these replies.

I had seen the discharge entry but was unaware of the removal order which sounds a promising lead to follow up. I ought to check out the Parkfield address too

I noticed on the  discharge entry there is a Matilda Shefford also discharged to the same place.

All good leads -so , many thanks to you all. This George Phelps (also Phillips) has been a brickwall for many years.

Happy New Year to you all - and good luck in your own researches,

Hi all

I have an ancestor, George Phelps born 10 September 1858, at Islington Workhouse (according to the birth certificate). His (unmarried) mother gives a residential address of 45 Gerrard Street.

On his baptism entry in October 1858 it says his mothers abode is the Poor House.

My query is - where is Gerrard Street? Is it the address of the workhouse/poor house? Or where is it in relation to the workhouse?

After many years, it looks like I've found this elusive ancestor.

Thanks in advance.

I always thought that PWC meant Post War credits - a sort of a savings certificate, which were redeemed many years after the war. My late mother had some which she cashed in during the 1970s.

Hi
Many thanks for those links, I will follow them up over the weekend. I think Lilian had a couple of daughters, but would need to check my files (partly packed away as moved home last year).

Many thanks again.  It is greatly appreciated.
