Ross & Cromarty / Re: Name study of HOLM on the black Isle?
« on: Saturday 14 March 15 12:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I am related to Katherine Holm of Resolis (1791-1870) who married Alexander Fraser, a carpenter or millwright.  One of their sons is Alexander Fraser who emigrated to Tasmania and became my GG Grandfather. Katherine's parents were John Holm and Isobel Barnet.

I was wondering if you had these Holms (of Balblair or Resolis) in your information?

Thanks
Rod Fraser

Inverness / Frasers of Cruivend 1841
« on: Saturday 11 February 12 23:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi from Tasmania,

I am trying to track down my GG Grandfather Alexander Fraser who we believe emigrated to Tasmania in 1855.  There are many Alexanders but based on his birthdate of March 10 in 1834 and baptism records we think the most likely Alexander was a boy living with his parents Peter and Margaret in Cruivend in 1841.

In Tasmania, Alexander was a carpenter.  He died at an early age in 1869 and little detail remains of him.  (My GG Grandmother was Ann McDonald who with her parents Lachlan and Jane came from Laggan, arriving in Tasmania in 1855).  We think Alexander used the St Andrew's Immigration Society based in Launceston Tasmania but there seem to be no surviving records from that society in relation to individual immigrants.

The Cruivend possibility is not proven but is the most likely and worth more research as we have no definite details on Alexander's life before he came to Tasmania.  Has anyone studied Fraser families in Cruivend at about that time? If so I would certainly welcome any suggestions as to local records or other researchers who have an interest in this family. My hope is to find some other indication of an emigration.  I note there was also a Fraser family headed by William Fraser in Cruivend in the 1841 census - not sure if they are related.

Rod Fraser

Lyn,

Did you ever get information on the St Andrews Immigartion Society records.

I am researching my GG Grandfather Alexander Fraser who came to Tamania on the Commodore Perry arriving April 1855 and my GG Grandmother Anne McDonald who came with her family on the Storm Cloud arriving in Tasmania in August 1855.  Both seem to have been organised through the St Andrews Immigration Society who used McNaughton and Cochrane of Glasgow as their local organisers (along with Society members Joseph Bonney and Alexander Learmonth).

I am having trouble linking Alexander to Scottish parents since we do not have parents names and hoped that some St Andrews records might have survived to give us some clues.  Have you found anything more on the Society?

Michelle,

I can't help with your family but some of mine (McDonalds) were also in the Storm Cloud when it arrived in Tasmania in 1855.

I am happy to give you some information on the ship's arrival if you wish.  Later I may have more details on the passengers when I get further into my research. The Tasmanian Archives Office has partial Storm Cloud records transcribed at http://www.archives.tas.gov.au/nameindexes/  on the "Arrivals" tab:

Family Name     Given Name(s)     Title     Ship     Port of Departure     Date of Arrival     Remarks     References
Campbell    Ann       Storm Cloud    Glasgow    29 Aug 1855    age 17    CB7/12/1/5 Bk26
Campbell    Catherine       Storm Cloud    Glasgow    29 Aug 1855    age 13    CB7/12/1/5 Bk26
Campbell    Christina       Storm Cloud    Glasgow    29 Aug 1855    age 10    CB7/12/1/5 Bk26

Staffordshire completed Look up Requests / Re: Beech Family Blackhalve Farm 1891 Census

Mort29,

Thanks so much for your help.  I have found the transcript at the references you have noted and can confirm it is the "missing" Beech family.  Using the details I was able to establish that they are recorded in the transcript used by "Findmypast" (which I have been using) as "BERCH" rather than BEECH.

I have lodged a request for correction with Findmypast but am interested in your comment that the family is indexed as "Bach" in "Ancestry".  I can see from the transcript how this might happen but I had thought that all the search services would use the same central transcriptions?  Does Ancestry use a completely different set of transcriptions?

Thanks so much for the welcome and the quick response.

The information and references are helpful.

Incidentally, the copy of the original marriage certificate (or extract?) simply states it to be the "Parish Church in the Parish of Wednesfield in the county of Stafford"

Hope you are having a great Christmas day.   It's actually already over here in Australia! (Now 12.45 am Boxing Day)   :'(

Staffordshire completed Look up Requests / Beech Family Blackhalve Farm 1891 Census
« on: Friday 25 December 09 13:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I am having trouble finding the Beech Family headed by Joseph Beech (born 1842 or 1844) in the 1891 Census.

I can find them in the 1881 census at Blackhalve Farm House, Wednesfield.  They are still there in 1901 and 1911 (although the 1901 data refers to the address as "Black Halos Lang".)

Joseph and Hannah had 13 children and finding who was at home in 1891 will be useful.

Is it possible they were omitted from the 1891 census?

Thanks
Rod

Dudley, Giraffe or Willow

Sorry to butt in but I am researching my wife's family who came from Blackhalve Farm, Wednesfield and stumbled across this topic.

My wife's grandparents John Beech and Clara Lily Smith were married ion 4th September 1924 in the "Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church" before emigrating to Tasmania.

I note Dudley's reference to the "Established Church" but don't understand what it means.  Can you help me with this?
