Armed Forces / Re: Royal Berkshire Reg TA
« on: Sunday 29 November 15 19:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi There

I have a suspicion that this group is not the 6th Battalion. I think they are the pre war 4th Battalion. The 6th (Service) Battalion was a Kitchener battalion and when first formed in 1914 wore post office uniforms due to the shortage etc. The group wearing bandoliers are very smart and look like pre 1914 men. A number of Pre war TA soldiers were posted to the Service Battalions to assist with training in the first instance, then remain whilst deployed to give structure. The Regimental Website at the Wardrobe [So named because thats the name of the building which contains the Regimental Museum] has many images from the 1st WW within the online COLLECTION. Give that a try.

Hope that helps

Cheers

As advised try the Regimental Museum Website as a starter. He is not shown in the online collection by name but if you go to the website….there click RESEARCH/COLLECTION/UNIT between the dates 1893 - 1905 you will get 477 hits relating to the battalion, Medals, some documents but mainly images and I am sure your soldier will appear in one of them albeit not named. Well worth a look to see what the battalion was up to. Then try the Regimental timeline (Taken from the digest of service) between the same dates for the 66th - 2nd Battalion and you should pick up further info regarding movements which could supplement your paperwork and assist in building the picture. www.thewardrobe.org.uk

The Regimental Headquarters  were based in Manchester in 1864, with 2 companies based at Weedon. They went to Ireland on the 21st July that year. If you want to have a look at the 49th (Later 1st Royal Berkshire Regiment) go to the Museum Website at www.thewardrobe.org.uk. Once there search the TIMELINE under the 49th, might throw up a few clues, and then under RESEARCH/COLLECTION/UNIT/49th you will see what the Regiment looked like. The museum does not hold individual soldiers records but always worth a try.

Good luck with your research

The 62nd (Wiltshire) Regiments museum is in Salisbury Wiltshire. The website is www.thewardrobe.org.uk . Give them a try they may have muster roll. During the time you are looking at the Regimental Depots were in fact all over the place and very ofen co locatred with outher units. The 62nd Regiments permant depot was opened about 1878-80 at Le Marchant Barracks, in Devizes.

Give it a try

Dear Hanover Bill

If you follow up the above link to the Regimental Museum Website www.thewardrobe.org.uk and there under research go to the timeline and then search the relevant dates for the 66th Regiment it will give you a picture of the Regiments movements which might assist. The time line you will be looking at comes from the Digest of service which does have some gaps but is nevertheless a good source. The Grenadiers of the 66th Regiment together with those of the 20th Regiment carried Napoleon to his first resting place when he died. If your relation was in the 1st/66th he would have taken part in the campaign against the Gurkhas prior to going to St Helena to join the 2nd/66th who themselves had some hard times in the Peninsula War.

Hope that helps

Dear Dillon King

Try the Regimental Museum Website at www.thewardrobe.org.uk This museum in Salisbury hold the records of the Royal Berkshire Regiment. They have an enquiry section on the website that will be worth trying. On the site also is the timeline which comes from the digest of service. It does not name names but gives battalion movements. Also try THE COLLECTION on the site which holds nearly 30.000 images many from the time you are looking at. Like a lot of Regimental Museums holding records for individual soldiers is a bit hit and miss, but still worth a try. [Its called THE WARDROBE because that is the name of the building that the collection is housed in next to Salisbury Cathedral]

Good Hunting

Greetings.....

How are you getting on with the book ?. Just as an after thought have you covered the Court Martial of 'Breaker' Morant of the Bushveldt Carabineers. He was executed. Two officers from the Wilts Regt were on the board and he was prosecuted by Major BOLTON of the Wilts Regt. There is a move in Australia to get him pardoned. An interesting twist to the Regiments time during the Boer War.

Dear Muffin

He enlisted in 1876 - Army number B/375 and was awarded the Afghan Campaign Medal. This info is on page 170 of the book MAIWAND - The last stand of the 66th (Berkshire) Regiment in Afghanistan, 1880. by Richard J Stacpoole-Ryding. ThisRegimental Publication and if interested available from the Regimental Museum Website on www.thewardrobe.org.uk. whilst in the site click into the collection/Unit/66th and trawl through. You will see a lot on this Regiment.

Hope that helps
