Derbyshire / Re: Matlock for Next Clue? - Cornelius Fulwood (Ilkeston)
« on: Friday 13 January 12 13:22 GMT (UK)  »
Just thought I would resurrect this thread to see if anybody can point me in the right direction.   To summarise I am trying to trace the baptism/christening record for a Cornelius Fulwood (Fullard on 1841 census) (b1811 Ilkeston, Derbyshire) to prove the father is John Fulwood (b 1765).

The only link to suggest John was the father came from familysearch.org.uk a pedigree submission by June Gail STACEY in the US. However on their records and discs at no point does she verify her source.   Lots of other family historians seem to be taking her online entry as gospel without checking for a source.

There is a poor law record from 1816 in Ilkeston that lists a Cornelius Fulwood to be the son of John Fulwood and the other brothers and sisters match, although the wife is listed as Amy, and other records suggest the wife of John should be called Anne Beardsley.

But I went to Matlock and trawled through their records and nowhere can I find any kind of record to show that my Cornelius Fulwood is definitely the son of John Fulwood.

So I just wondered if anybody had any suggestions on how I might be able to verify the father of Cornelius Fulwood?

Thanks.

Derbyshire / Re: Derbyshire leads for other Researchers?
« on: Wednesday 10 March 10 20:16 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching my family in Long Eaton and found useful information at the old Long Eaton Advertiser offices, where they kept all back issues.  However, the Long Eaton Advertiser no longer exists as a newspaper, but there is a website:

http://woile.blogspot.com/

Just mentioned in case it is helpful with your research.  You are able to put notices etc. on the website.

Sue

Thanks Sue, good website.  I live in the South East now, but I am only 50 minutes outside central London so what I tend to do and may be helpful for others too is visit the British Newspaper library up at Colindale to view old WW1 and later copies of the LE Advertiser.  Found a smashing article and picture of my Gran's uncle (my grt grt uncle) who was the first person in Long Eaton killed during WW1 I think. My next plan is to note all family deaths and marriages and to go back through back copies to see if I can find any stories or pictures.  Only slight problem is they charge a lot for copies of pages of interest.

Technical Help / Family Tree Maker 2010 Review - Software Problems
« on: Sunday 10 January 10 09:19 GMT (UK)  »
I have previously used Family Tree Maker 2009, and decided to upgrade to take advantage of the 6 month ancestry offer. Just to note that before I relay my initial review I am from an IT background so I am not usually thrown by software problems but this has to be the worse software install I have undertaken in a good few years since I was Beta testing software.

I am on Windows 7 and I popped the CD in and upon install  I got the following error about halfway through install:

Family Tree Maker 2010 Error
Error 1330.A file that is required cannot be installed because the cabinet file E:\Core_A~1.cab has an invalid digital signature. This may indicate that the cabinet file is corrupt. Error 24592 was returned by WinVerifyTrust." Followed by "Error 1603 Fatal Error during Installation".

A quick Google shows this is not a unique error to me. A workaround was to perform a clean boot on Windows. I will list how to do that below in case I am not alone in this. I also disconnected my broadband and disabled my firewall and virus software. The install went through on this time so I reset the boot options and rebooted normally.

Upon opening the software I then get another error message that FMT was unable to be opened. On the desktop icon I right clicked and in the compatibility mode I set it to run in Vista mode and as an Administrator.

The program then eventually works. So what about the software itself?  Well for FTM 2009 users there is not a great difference that I have spotted so far, a few minor tweaks, nothing worth upgrading for. The web view with ancestry does seem to have improved performance, exactly the same layout but seemingly improved speed and also does transfer media when merging records to FTM, on 2009 if you did not click the media tabs first it would not transfer the media just the record. Is it worth upgrading from 2009?  So far I would say no, the changes are a minor improvement, if anything this should be a free upgrade such are the changes so minor but if you want a cheap subscription to ancestry then you might as well upgrade by buying it cheaply off Amazon as I did.

However the software installation problems smack to me of a rushed job, not fully beta tested simply to get another version out for 2010. My advice to Avanquest would be to concentrate on quality over quantity and only upgrade when there is significant change and functionality and only after full beta testing across all platforms.

Ashley

Note: To do a clean reboot:

Click Start > Run> msconfig.exe to start the System Configuration Utility.

On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the Load startup items check box.
On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all.

(this may delete previous restore point info settings, so proceed at own risk)

Click OK, and then click Restart.

Once finished installing, repeat procedure to reset normal startup.

Australia / Re: Tracing Convicts Details?
« on: Saturday 09 January 10 09:16 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks Holly that is really helpful. I don't think he is the John I am looking for, I have his age to be 39 at the time, but will keep checking as lot of the brothers named their sons John so may still be linked. (Fulwood was the name) but around the time due to bad spelling some records show them as Fullard.

Australia / Tracing Convicts Details?
« on: Saturday 09 January 10 07:33 GMT (UK)  »
I have found a record for a John Fullard, one of 182 convicts transported on the Georgiana, 29 March 1831. Convicted at Middlesex Gaol Delivery for a term of 7 years.

My question is if it is possible to work out more about this John Fullard, his birth details, date, location etc.  Would that information be Australia end or is there likely to be records Middlesex side somewhere?

Vessel: Georgiana.
Date of Departure: 29 March 1831.
Place of Arrival: New South Wales.

Derbyshire / Re: Matlock for Next Clue? - Cornelius Fulwood (Ilkeston)
« on: Friday 08 January 10 05:15 GMT (UK)  »
There is a removeal order from Ilkeston dated 1816 to Bilborough, Nottingham for this family. Ref RM7 516
John FULWOOD,
Amy wife,
Sarah,
Thomas,
William,
Alice, Henry,
Cornelius,
Moses.

Thanks for this Carol, I think this as helped a lot. I am still looking to confirm that my Cornelius Fulwood is the one listed here with John being his father.  Where I am at now is I have checked the original document which gives the children's ages, and that all links correctly with my Cornelius. On Family Search there is a Pedigree File (no film Batch reference) which links all these children to the same parents, John Fulwood/Fullard and Anne Beardsley, so this suggests it is the right family. However, the only question is over the wife's name. The Pedigree files list Anne Beardsley, the poor law document says Amy.

So I think, and correct me if I am wrong guys, my next step is to gain access to the Pedigree Resource File CD #46 to see if the lady that submitted the pedigree files to Family Search as sourced her work. It was the same lady that submitted the info on all the children, she gives their DOB, Marriage Dates and with all the marriages links the parents which is what I am trying to prove for Cornelius.

The only remaining question then is on the names. The Poor Law order lists Fulwood correctly, however on the Family Search and the 1841 census all the Children put their name as Fullard, but all were back to Fulwood (or Fullwood) by time the 1851 census came around.  So my question is why they name change for all of them?  Would that have been to get around the poor law removal order to return back to Ilkeston where they were all listed in 1841? If they were all spelling their name wrong, they all corrected it by 1851.

Thanks, Ashley

I want to gain access to a Family Search Pedigree Resource CD (CD #46) which are orderable at $46 but does anybody know if these are accessible at the National Archives like the BIVRI is, or elsewhere in London to view?

Thanks,

Derbyshire / Re: 1911 Census

Where do you have the information that Walter and father were both joiners from???

Did he marry??

There must be some snippet of info -why are you seeking him??

Who was he living with in 1919???

If the info you have is from a mrriage cert, then who were witnesses????

Suz

Thanks for looking Suz, I did see that Walter too. He is my Grt Granddad, the only info I have about him other than his name was from the marriage certificate to my Grt Nan from the 1919 Marriage Cert it lists him as 49 Bachelor, Joiner 74 College St, Long Eaton with a father (deceased) who was a joiner. My Nan died this year so we don’t know where her dad was from, if he was local or not.  One witness was my grt Nan's dad Fred Smedley, the other I don't know looks like it says Phyllis but I can't read the surname, but it's not one I recognise. I am not even sure when he died, I do have a pic of my Nan and Granddad marrying in 1945 where he was there so I know it was after that. There was a Walter Taylor from Basford district that died in 1952 so I may take a gamble and order that death certificate to try and get his exact DOB and birth location.

Derbyshire / 1911 Census
« on: Wednesday 06 January 10 10:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

Do we know how complete the 1911 census is for Derbyshire, Long Eaton to be more precise. I am unable to find a Walter Taylor (b abt 1870) living in Long Eaton. I looked up the street I know he lived on in 1919 which was 74 College Street. But when I address search for College Street, 74 is missing.

I have tried various wildcard name searchs but nothing comes up. I have no other info for him (other than father was also Walter) and both were 'joiners' by occupation, so I am only assuming that he was in Long Eaton in 1911.

Any ideas?

Thanks,  Ashley
