Hi , thanks for the reply.

Sounds like we have been reading the same historical sources for Skye.

Noted that your Donald McDonald (b.1795) was married to Jean Pollock in Paisley. During my own research I found a will for Neil McDonald (b.1776 - first son of Malcolm McDonald & Catherine Stewart) The executor for Neil's will was a James Pollock (Yarn Merchant - Paisley). As yet not established if there is a McDonald family connection to James Pollock. Census for 1841 indicates James Pollock lived at Underwood Rd (Paisley). The maiden name for his wife was Landale, her first name is not recorded.

Family of Malcolm McDonald & Catherine Stewart:
Married 1776 (6th Jan) - Paisley Low Church

Children all born in Paisley:

Neil McDonald b.1776  - m.1806 Mary Dunn (Manufacturer and Town Baillie for Paisley)
Peter McDonald b.1778 - Died as infant
James McDonald b.1779 - m.1807 Mary Jarden - (Weaver, later Customs Collector - 3 x gt.grandfather)
Catherine McDonald b.1780
Peter McDonald b.1783 (Spirit Dealer, Census 1841 - Broommielaw St, Glasgow)
Margaret McDonald b.1785
Elisabeth McDonald b.1788
Jean McDonald b.1786
Alexander McDonald b.1790 (Weaver, Census 1841 - Castle St, Paisley )
Janet McDonald b.1792 - m.1814 Robert Provan
Agnes McDonald b.1795

(1841 Census details for Peter & Alexander still to be verified)

Found connections to Isle of Skye during Mac/McDonald family research.

Earliest known Mac/McDonald ancestor:  Malcolm McDonald born abt 1740-1755 ? Skye or Paisley.
Married Catherine Stewart - Paisley 1776

Their granddaughter Elizabeth Helen McDonald was mother to African missionary Frederick Stanely Arnot - Her parents were Neil McDonald (b.1776 Paisley) and Mary Dunn (m.1806)

The Skye connection is revealed in a biography of F.S. Anrot by Ernest Baker (out of copy write)
- THE LIFE & EXPLORATIONS OF FREDERICK STANLEY ARNOT

It says - "His mother was the youngest daughter of Neil Macdonald,  of Macdonald and Dunn, sewed-muslin manufacturers of Paisley. Mr. Macdonald died before his daughter's marriage with Mr. Arnot. His grandparents belonged to the islands of Skye, from which they fled at the time of the rebellion in connection with Prince Charlie."

Re: Donald Mac/McDonald:

Found a Donald McDonald recorded at the same address as Neil McDonald (b.1776) while researching the Paisley trade directories (1810 - 1840's) . Firsty recorded at St.Mirren Street then later at Love Street.

As yet unable to establish the family connection to this Donald McDonald.
Neither Neil (b.1776)  or his father Malcolm have any (recorded) children called "Donald".

Paisley Trade Directory entries:

1823  - 'McDonald & Dunn - Manufacturer' at 34 St.Mirren Street with 'house' at 15 Love Street.
1823  -  Donald McDonald,' Sherriff Officer' is also recorded at 34 St.Mirren Street

1834  - Donald McDonald, 'D & J Manufacturers' at 14 St. Mirren St. - 'House' recorded at 49 Love St. The same entry appears for 1836 and 1838 directories.

Webby,
I'm still actively researching. If I note any relevant "Paisley" Provans will let you know.

Both the Poor Law records at Glasgow Mitchell library and Paisley reference library are a good source for early 1800's family information. I believe both libraries can do searches (by telephone or email ?) for a fee if you are unable to do any searches in person. Poor Law records started in 1832 (I think), they can provide useful additional information beyond the 1841 census. During my search information provided by poor law records gave a cross reference to the Provan family. I was then able to go back beyond 1800 by identifying 2 (previously unknown) siblings of my 3 x grandfather. From there I had was able to indentify common parents for three McDonald siblings for which there was only one match in Paisley.

Also, I believe there are Provans buried in the High Kirk (Oakshaw- Paisley) graveyard. Don't have my notes currently at hand but can share this information next time. This information came from Paisley rererence library.

Thanks - George

Hi George
Many thanks for your info....I have also tried to follow through on the two Mary Provan's you mentioned, but again, rather too hard to try and prove who was whom!!.
With regard to the Trade Directory.  Another wonderful chatter - Justin, who is very knowledgeable on Scot's churches, helped me with the TD entries.  I think he may have been researching his family at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow(?), so he may have come across the TD's there.  Perhaps if he comes online he may enlighten us!.
Once again George, many thanks for your help.

Webby,
The only Mary Provan of similar age (17) is recorded at Mews Lane - Gorbals - Glasgow (1841)
This Mary Provan is recorded as born in Lanarkshire (Glasgow area - see below). However, the early census returns are not always accurate. I've found this in my own searches, with family members being recorded as born in Paisley on one census and then Glasgow on another. Also, some of my own ancestors moved to Gorbals from Paisley for work or to join other family. Both places were weaving centers.

For 1841 there is also a Mary Provan (age 15) recorded at Balcamie - Ayrshire (father James Provan). And a Isabella Provan (age 40) recorded at 19 Brunswick Street - Glasgow. If you need this information I can send it on.

Thanks for Provan trade directory information. Would be interested if there any Mc/MacDonalds, Mc/MacGibbons or Stewarts recorded for Paisley trades 1770's - 1850's.
Perhaps you can send me any links you have ? Thanks.

Regards - George

Hello George
Thank you very much for looking for these illusive Provan people!.  I think I may have come to a dead end with them.
My Mary Provan would have been about 17 years of age in 1841, but I haven't been able to find her in that Census.
Her marriage to William Kerr in 1846 gives his address as 84 High St and her address at 74 High St, Paisley.   The 1851 Census Mary gives her birth place as being Paisley.   So goodness knows where she was for the 1841 Census.!.
So if you ever come across a Mary Provan in your search, I would be very pleased to hear from you ;D

PS: The Kerr family she married into were Upholsterer's - in 1827 they were at 7 Gauze St then in the 1838/1839 Trade Directory there was a Robert Provan, Manufacturer listed at 170 Causeyside with another entry for William Provan, manufacturer at 9 Gauze Street.

Renfrewshire / Re: McDonald Family, Paisley

Hi Rosie,
I have a William McDonald (b.1821) in my own family line. His parents were James McDonald (b.1779) & Janet McGibbon (b.1787). I have no death records for William.
William's brother James (b.1815) married a Margaret Wilson in 1838 - Low Church, Paisley.

While researching Paisley McDonalds I came across records of an Angus McDonald who is buried in the High Kirk (School Wynd) Paisley. I believe there is no headstone.
Malcolm McDonald (b.1745 approx.) my 4 x gt grandfather and his wife Catherine Stewart are both buried in the High Kirk graveyard. It's possible these separate burial liars have some form of family connection - As residence street names recorded in burial records have some similarities.
No ages are recorded but would guess Angus McDonald was older than Malcolm McDonald. As his liar numbers precede that of Malcolm's. Perhaps we can share information.

Thanks - George

Hi,

Having problems finding any record of William McDonald's birth in Paisley about 1830 and any record of his marriage to Mary Wilson also in Paisley in 1854. His death cert. from 1872 gives his parents as Angus McDonald and Janet Fairlie but I have been unable to find records for them either.
Accord to the census' 1861 and 1871 William worked in a soap work and lived in New Sneddon.

Can anyone help?

« on: Monday 26 July 10 20:34 BST (UK)  »
Webby, by chance I've been researching Provan families in the Paisley area. My 4 x gt grandfather Malcolm McDonald had a daughter Janet who married mill owner Robert Provan in 1814 in Paisley.

The only Isabella Provan I've found on 1841 census lived in Kilbarchan (Barrholm St) near Paisley. See below 1841 census results for house dwelling in Barrholm Street.

Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
PROVAN George M 45 Silk Hand Loom Weaver  Renfrewshire
PROVAN Janet F 35 Silk Winder  Renfrewshire
PROVAN Agness F 15 Silk Winder  Renfrewshire
PROVAN Isabell F 15 Silk Winder  Renfrewshire
PROVAN James M 13 Silk Winder  Renfrewshire
PROVAN William M 10   Renfrewshire
PROVAN Janet F 7   Renfrewshire
PROVAN Ann F 4   Renfrewshire
PROVAN Alexr M 2   Renfrewshire
PROVAN Alexr M 35 Silk Hand Loom Weaver  Unknown

Could someone please have a look at the 1841 Census to see if there is an Isabella Povan in the Paisley area please.
