Family History Beginners Board / Finding who lived at an address
« on: Saturday 31 December 16 16:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

Can anyone tell me how to find out who lived at an address in 1911/1912 please?

the house still exists today, and I have a record of a child being born there in 1912, but it seems odd to find my relative there...

Can I find out whether the property was perhaps a 'home for fallen women' or similar?

Thank you

Travelling People / travellers in the censuses

HI

Do I just have to accept that my ancestors, known to be living in 'living vans' on common land in 1911 might not appear on any other census (I can't find them)?  or is there any other way I can trace them back?

Thanks

Cathy

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Sheba Mott

Hi

Can someone help me decipher the name of my ancestor please?  It has been transcribed as Sheba E Mott on the 1881 Census, but I can't find any trace of a Sheba in any other census, so I guess it must be wrongly transcribed. I have looked at the original and I just can't work out what it can be.

if you look up Sheba E Mott, born 1842 in Longwick  on the 1881 census you should see the entry.

Thank you
Cathy

Thanks all. Think I'm going to go back to the village and knock on doors and ask. The owners might know roughly how old the house is.

The Common Room / old maps

I know some ancestors of mine lived in Southend near Henley on Thames in Bucks/Oxon. I would like to find out which cottages were there in the 1860's.  I have been to look at the village, but  can't tell from the building styles which are the right age. Of course they may all be much newer!

Can anyone suggest how I might go about finding out this information?  The old map I have is too small a scale to show individual properties.

Thanks.

Hello all.

Can anyone  help me please?  I have a birth certificate that says the mothers name is L E Greigg, late Harding, formerly Gatland.

Does this mean Gatland was her maiden name and Harding a previous married name?  Or vice versa?

Thank you
