Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Re: Rafborough
« on: Monday 16 March 15 16:58 GMT (UK)  »
Rafborough is on the OS maps:
http://streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=487328&y=153550&z=120&sv=farnborough&st=3&tl=Map+of+Farnborough,+Hampshire+[Town]&searchp=ids.srf&mapp=map.srf
although it is placed incorrectly in this link.
Rafborough was built by prisoners of war from WW1. It is just north of the airfield and is south east of where it says it is on that link. It is bordered to the south by Marrowbrook Lane, by Cody Road to the west, Fletcher Road and Busk Crescent to the north, and Weir Av to the east. In the middle are Keith Lucas Road and Gooden Crescent where I live. There are also some of the same houses at the northeasten end of Marrowbrook Lane.
We dont think of ourselves in Rafborough anymore. Its an old name, we are now Farnborough. Although an old guy who used to live opposite would insist that we are not in Farnborough but the village of Cove.
Cody flew the first plane in Europe, Gooden was the first director of RAE (Royal Air Establisment - or similar name). I think that Fletcher was also RAE. Another old timer said that Keith Lucas invented the aeronautical compass but I have never found any info to support this.

Armed Forces / Royal Flying Corps service records

I have recently found that that my grandfather was in the RFC and am looking to trace his service records.
I suspect that he transferred over to the RAF as his name is on the list of first personel. I know that the service records are in "Air 79" in Kew. But you have to go their in person.

Is there anywhere else that these records are? Are they online at all?

Completed Census Requests / Re: COMPLETED Eleanor(a) Bowing
« on: Monday 05 March 12 14:30 GMT (UK)  »
vero,
Sorry for missing your post here.

I had not got anywhere with the death of Eleanor. I presumed it was in India but that was just a guess.

I would question the age of John Bowing being 61 in the Ellis Island records. That does not tie in with whats in the various census'. There are other John Bowings, some with the date that would make them 61ish in 1920; but none of those have the same occupation of chemist.

Nice photo, can I copy it?

Jenn, not sure if she did look further on the electoral roles.

Neil, yes the grandfather died in NSW. Have his death certificate and probate.

Sue, I hadnt thought of FB. Again, glaringly obvious once its been suggested. This is why I like this site so much, people suggest stuff you have not thought of.

I am not totally comfortable with putting my grandfathers name or his last wife's name here. I have so much to go on now, that hopefully I or my father can find his half sister. If we dont, then I might come back with their names.

Thanks for all your thoughts.

Thanks to you all for your thoughts. Very much appreciated.

I forgot to mention that we had looked in the white pages. Sorry for that.

Muss, thats a good idea. Sometimes its easy to miss the obvious.

The person my Dad hired did put notices in local libraries. Not sure if one was also put in the paper, but worth doing if it hasnt been done.

muddy48, lots to go on there, thank you very much.

Australia / Searching someone alive

I am hoping that someone can give me some advice on where to look next.

My father never knew his father. We recently found out that he died in Australia in 1957. We have his death certificate and on it, it says that there was a daughter from the last marriage, a half-sister my father didnt know.
We have her first name from this, and that she was born in 1948 in Sydney.

From his probate papers, we know the daughters middle name and her date of birth.

We know where her mother was buried. My father sent a letter asking them to pass it onto the owner of the grave; its his half sister who has now married. The last contact the cemetery had with her was in 1989.

From the 1980 electoral role, we find her with the same married surname as above, and her husbands name.

We cant find her death in the Ryerson index.
My Dad has hired someone in Sydney. They couldnt find her in the most recent electoral role.
Havent had any luck with Lost Cousins.

Is there anywhere else that we could look for her?

England / Re: THOMAS SCOTT born 1640
« on: Tuesday 15 November 11 11:04 GMT (UK)  »
There is a Thomas Scott who was baptised in Wakefield 10 April 1640. His father was John.
Another Thomas Scott was baptised Netherthong, Yorkshire on 26 June 1642 . Father, Thomas.
Another in Huddersfield 16 Oct 1642 to Xoferi.
Another in Sutton, Cambridgeshire on 15 Sep 1640 to William
Another in Lambeth on 17 Jul 1640 to John.

Just doing a quick search. In 1640 there are a further 2 baptisms of Thomas Scott in England. In 1641, there is just the one. In 1642 there are two more in addition to the above. In 1639 there are 3, in 1638 there are 3.
With a more detailed search, I am sure more Thomas Scotts would pop up and I cant see all parish records.

I dont think you are going to get further back, soon, with this one.

For Samuel Scott, the nearest I can get is 1680 and 1686. As I said, I cant see all parish registers.

England / Re: Thomas Kerr New Zealand Australia England Scotland

There is also a Thomas Kerr who was tried for (cant read the crime) in 1840 in Lancashire (again cant read where, but it looks like Liverpool). He was age 25 and was found not guilty.

There also looks like there was a will; 24 Nov 1881. Attached to Thomas Kerr, 1817-1881. Unfortunately, I cant see any more.
