The Lighter Side / Re: Politeness costs nothing.............
« on: Saturday 23 November 13 16:33 GMT (UK)  »
I've had no experience of Genes Reunited website, but, as others have mentioned, lack of politeness is becoming more common generally these days.  One Christmas a couple of years ago I  composed....I dunno...essays including everything I'd found on family history during an intense spell of research.   I sent, along with Christmas cards, copies of my work to two cousins, one from each side of my family,  both around my own age, both of whom have offspring (I do not).  I hoped that they would enjoy knowing a little about our family history, as I had, and pass the information on to their families.

I was very surprised, and quite sad, that I received not a single acknowledgement - never mind a thank you!

"Thank you" seem to be the hardest words now!

Thanks for the link, Graham.  I began watching but found the film depressing, I have saved the link for a second try and future viewing.

I was born 1939 in Hull, so remember most of the horrible war years - 1940s and all the 1950s.
You know, after watching just a little of that film it made me really glad to be in 2013, in spite of the bad stuff,  in spite of the fact that I'm likely on my last lap mortality-wise   ;) - and the political idiocies going on here in the USA, a government shutdown just ended.  :-\

It's valuable to be reminded though, and I shall go back and watch the film in full soon.  I loved Pete Postlethwaite -  favourite role was in  "Brassed Off".

Oh!  LOL!  that reminded me of a pairing I'd overlooked which fits here:

My paternal great grandmother, Fanny, married gt-grandfather John Thomas.  ;D

Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / Boswell Moor
« on: Sunday 22 September 13 18:28 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find a place rather than a record this time. I wonder if anyone has access to a 17th century or earlier map of North Yorkshire, north of Vale of Pickering-ish.  A distant ancestor hailed from Boswell Moor, but I can find no mention of it on maps available online or via Google search.
I suspect it's somewhere north of Allerston/Ebberston - but could be way off mark.  I can see various ......Moor place or farm names but no Boswell Moor.  Any help or suggestion would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Nothing very unusual among mine, except for one - I felt as though I'd wandered into 'Lord of the Rings' territory when I found a 5th great grandfather "Matthew of Marishes Vasey" and his Dad "Thomas of Marishes Vasey". It was probably a way of distinguishing them from other Matt and Tom Vasey in the area; don't know whether they were actually baptised in that way though, info came from other trees.

Other than that, Catherine Smartfoot is best I can come up with.

I remember "kincough" back in East Yorkshire long ago,  more as "king cough", but it could just be flaky memory.  I wonder, if it really was king cough, if it meant whooping cough -as in king of coughs?

One that always makes me laugh - my husband (a Kansan) once had someone who had recognised him from a distance say:

"I knewd I knowd ya when ya retched up yer hand an' wove!" :D

Here on the Texas border I've heard:

"He looks like he's been rode hard and put away wet!"  (When somebody is looking a bit rough)

and

"She's all growed up an' haired over"

alien lady's saying about a brick sh*t house reminded me of one of my grandmother's favourites, used to describe something very shiny:

"It shines like a petty door on a frosty morning"

Translation:  petty = outside lavatory, usually it was an earth closet, usually placed at some distance from the house, for obvious reasons, up a long garden path.  :)
