It might help to say where the chap was living in 1849, those abbreviations may be a local 'thing'?

World War One / Re: Medal index card question

Hi,
Actually i know very little about him, i found the medal index card because i have got the bloke's British War Medal, i was hoping to find if he had any descendants who would want it, but the index card is all i've found, no other records.
Here's the other side of it, the medal is inscribed "1932 PTE H. WALKER. DURH.L.I.".

Hi, does anyone know what this means? It is written on the reverse side of a medal index card, usually they are left blank, i cannot work it out.

England / Re: 'UK records hub'.. 'pantsdown' mariage records database?
« on: Friday 08 January 10 20:48 GMT (UK)  »
I found the UK records hub, but was definitely NOT directed there from Rootschat. Re-reading the post, I am not sure that MFWUK was referring to Rootschat. Perhaps he will clarify the position?

Yes, it absolutely was from a link on here that's why i posted to here.. there's a box at the top of each page with 2 or 3 links which seem to be random, one is for that site.. that is how i ended up there!

In fact check out the screenshot.. (the links are at the bottom of pages too, evidently).

England / 'UK records hub'.. 'pantsdown' mariage records database?
« on: Thursday 07 January 10 15:14 GMT (UK)  »
This site has a link to "uk records hub" website, i followed the link & did a search for a marriage in Stockton on Tees, England.. I was informed that it had found the marriage record in it's database but i was then asked to pay $39 before i could view it (& an unlimited number of other records too, apparently).
I was a bit suspicious of this, and of being asked to pay in US dollars for what purported to be a British site, so i did another search but this time i searched for the name xxxxx yyyyy zzzzz who was married in pantsdown, uk.. it found that marriage record too and again it wanted $39 from me before i could see it.

Seems rather dodgy to me, do a search for anything on that site & it will tell you that it has found the record you're looking for whether it exists or not & then ask you for money to view it.. I was not prepared to pay $39 to see what result i was given from the pantsdown marriage register, but i doubt it would have been genuine.

World War One / Re: Royal Munster Fusiliers. Which batalion?

This page may be helpful to you, it's very concise & easy to follow. Check out the 5th battalion, the text tallies with your info.

The National Archives have digitised a lot of the WW1 war diaries & they can be downloaded (costs £3.50 i believe), but of course you need to know exactly which Battalion you're looking for & which date.
Good luck.

If anybody's interested, here is a link to download Snowden's autobiography (or perhaps the first part of it?):
