Title: 1841 Lewes census look up request please
Post by: Alord on Sunday 23 October 05 14:30 BST (UK)
Would like to find out names and how many children there were on the 1841 Lewes census for the following couple:

John Miller married to Ann (Ellis) living in Lewes, both will be around 40 yrs old.  Occupation not known, could be iron foundry or smithing?

I already know about John Edward  born 1826, David born 1831 and Isaiah born 1836 but I think there must be others....

Thank you very much for your time.

Hi Alison

I notice from the 1851 Census that John is indeed an Iron Foundry Labourer aged 53 with his wife Ann, aged 52 and just one son Isaiah aged 15 and a grandson William H aged 1 - their address is New Road in St John Sub Castro district of Lewes.

John Edward is also listed aged 25, Tinplate worker JM together with his wife Sarah and child John Edward aged 3 and George aged 2 months

Also listed is David aged 21, Blacksmith JM and his wife Elizabeh.

I am now going to see if I can find them on the 1841 now I know which area of Lewes they lived in.

They probably all worked at the "Phoenix Iron Works" which was only a few yards from their home.

Thanks very much Chris, that's great, I hope you can find them on the 1841.

Good to have the local knowledge of the Phoenix Iron Works also, because all the family seem to continue with similar occupations through several generations, including something called whitesmith? is this working with white metals?

Thank you for your time.

Hi again

They were not in the St John under the castle ward in 1841, so will have to now look in the other areas of Lewes.

Yes, a whitesmith dealt with things like silver, tin, etc

I will try to find you some pictures of the Phoenix Ironworks - now sadly all gone - but it was a big bustling hive of activity in the 1800's
