Title: Charman in Dorking 1841 and 1851 Census
Post by: ncastle on Sunday 23 October 05 04:28 BST (UK)
Hi

I am looking for Edward Charman (b 1841, Dorking) in 1841 or 1851 census for Dorking. In 1861 Edward (age 20) is living in Dorking with his grandparents John Charman (b.1795 Capel) and Mary Charman (b 1794, Leigh). I have some evidence that his mother was Elizabeth Charman (b abt 1815). I would be interested to find info on Edward and any family members living with John and Mary Charman in 1841 and 1851.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Neil

Thanks for your help. My information on Edward Charman for the 1861 census comes from a 1837online.com transcription. It definitely says Edward (age 20 b.~1841) was the grandson of John and Mary.  The Edward Charman in the 1841 and 1851 census appears to have been born in 1838-1839. So it is possible that the two Edwards are different.  If anyone has the opportunity could you look up Elizabeth Charman or Lucas in 1851 census for Dorking to check if there is a Edward Charman or Lucas (age 10) living with her. I have evidence that Elizabeth Charman married a Henry Lucas in 1841.

Cheers

Neil

Edward vey much appears to be the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Charman and John Okeshot, baptised 25/12/1838 in Holmwood. Elizabeth went on to marry Henry Lucas 25/12/1841 in Mickleham (they seemed to like Christmas day). I suspect that Elizabeth died 2nd qtr 1849 in Dorking Reg District and Henry Lucas married Susan West 4Q1852 in Dorking RD. I haven't checked the death or re-marriage.

Elizabeth was born Elizabeth Roffey 30/10/1815 and baptised Elizabeth Charman Roffey 3/12/1815 in Leigh. Her mother was Mary Roffey (bap 4/5/1794 Leigh) who subsequently married John Charman 15/1/1816 in Leigh.

I trust some of this helps. Colin Charman

Hi Colin & Neil,
As I have the Dorking registers (1538-1840 baps & burials) & Holmwood 1838-1840) I can confirm the baptism of Edward at Holmwood.  'Edward son of John Okeshot of Dorking, waiter & Elizabeth Charman of Holmwood, maidservant, 25/12/1838'.

From the West Surrey burial Index - Elizabeth Lucas - - 1849 age 32, Holmwood.

1851 census - Holmwood.  HO107/1598/159/7
John Charman head 56 ag lab born Capel
Mary wife 57 born Leigh
James son unm 25 ag lab born Dorking
Edward unm son 13 scholar born Dorking

And look who's next door! (same ref)
Henry Lucas wid 34 ag lab
Joshua? son 8
George son 6
Emma dau 2
Maria Dudley serv wid 72?

1861 - Holmwood RG9/440/11/5

Henry Lucas mar 45 ag lab
Susan  wife 35
Emma dau 12
Henry son 7
Mary Ann 5
James 4
William WEST stepson 12

John, Mary & Edward are next door as Alli gave on his/her posting, so I think the evidence is overwhelming that it's all the same Edward even though he's down as, ' son' on earlier census.

If anyone wants Charman look-ups for Capel or Dorking, just let me know,

Jane
